MORTUARY CUSTOMS AND THE BELIEF IN
SURVIVAL AFTER DEATH AMONG THE
SOUTH-EASTERN BANTU
By MAX GLUCKMANN
The belief in survival after death is not a response of the individual to death. It is accepted as part of his heritage and must therefore be related to mortuary and other social customs. Social anthropologists who explain it entirely by the emotional comfort it gives to the dying person and his survivors avoid many of the important problems involved. Typical statements such as that by believing in his immortality man "never has to come to an impasse and his hope will hurdle death itself," or that in the "conflict and chaos" of death religion "standardises the comforting, the saving belief," are very facile explanations. Unloved parents are buried with full ceremony; strangers have special funerals; people dying away from home may be buried by proxy. The emotions expressed at a funeral may have no relation to the emotions actually felt. Thus Miss Hunter tells us of the Mpondo that "women are not expected to make a fuss and weep after a child is buried ....., but the fact that they are composed does not mean that they do not feel the loss bitterly." Mortuary customs impose on the survivors not only certain modes of behaviour but also the simulation of certain emotions which may or may not be felt. Thus the statements of Wallis and Malinowski may describe the emotional satisfaction derived on occasion from a funeral but they do not advance a sociological understanding of all mortuary customs and beliefs. I propose in the following analysis to indicate what seems to me some of the major problems, chiefly by reference to Junod's account of the Thonga of Portuguese East Africa.

Since then, the Department with its distinctive ethos has flourished. Under the leadership of a number of well-known academics - Brian Bloomfield, Stephen Ackroyd Frank Blackler Bill Cooke , the Department has developed a strategy which encompasses research interests across the interconnected areas of organisation, work, and technology. The traditional emphasis on a high level of conceptual awareness and especially interest in organisation theory continues to be an identifying feature of the Department but has been supplemented by the deployment of ideas and theories from the area of science, technology and society studies (STS) and ethical philosophy. The Department also continues to develop its involvement in the critical analysis of applied areas of the field such as human resource management and employment relations. Departmental expertise in these areas supports collaborative work being undertaken in the Management School (LUMS) and in the wider University. As a group we are concerned with the development of sound social science concepts that can be applied and tested in the analysis of behaviour in a wide diversity of organisational settings. The distinctive approach developed during this period has earned the Department international recognition. The distinctive approach the Department has pioneered rests on three pillars which underpin our research and teaching:

Anthropological Forum is a journal of social anthropology and comparative sociology that was founded in 1963 and has a distinguished publication history. The journal provides a forum for both established and innovative approaches to anthropological research. A special section devoted to contributions on applied anthropology appears periodically. The editors are especially keen to publish new approaches based on ethnographic and theoretical work in the journal's established areas of strength: Australian culture and society, Aboriginal Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Department of Anthropology Welcome to the Wellesley College Anthropology Department! Although we are a small department, all of the conventional fields of anthropology are covered by the faculty. You may concentrate in physical anthropology archaeology , or social anthropology Our courses cover Africa, Latin America, and Asia, as well as the culture of the United States. Many of them explore contemporary issues in the Third World and the relationship between the United States and the Third World. We offer a broad range of courses in the cross-cultural study of family, gender, law, economics, and technology. In various ways, our courses cover the relationship between anthropology and history. Furthermore, the Department has an ongoing cooperative relationship with MIT and Brandeis University. You may complement our course selection with courses from either institution. If you are interested in archaeology, you might, after some initial work, wish to participate in the Boston-wide Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology, which will give you practical experience concerning technological processes and their development. There are opportunities to participate in archaeological field projects both here and abroad. For anthropology majors, there are also field trips and urban internships. Department Office: Pendleton East, Room 331

Overview
Social Anthropology has a thriving research culture, bringing together academic staff, a lively and cosmopolitan body of postgraduate researchers, and a growing number of postdoctoral fellows. In recent years we have won significant external funding from the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, and the Leverhulme Trust, as well as non-academic partners like the Department for International Development. We have an excellent record of success in recent ESRC and British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship schemes. Social Anthropology was ranked 5th in the UK according to the 2008 RAE.

Social Anthropology explores and compares the ways different peoples live. Today anthropologists are as likely to work in Western urban contexts as they are to research in Alaska or on a tributary of the Amazon. Wherever they work, by being sensitive to social and cultural contexts, anthropologists can gain insights into different ways of being. Social Anthropology's central methodology, ethnography, provides context-sensitive answers to why people think and behave the way they do. The anthropological contribution to understanding society is characteristically one of laying bare what we take for granted: making un-stated assumptions and beliefs visible and analysing their workings and consequences. The St Andrews department of Social Anthropology is in the first rank of research-led departments in Britain. According to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, its output of 'world leading' research was bettered only by the London School of Economics.
