Social Anthropology
Social anthropology is the comparative study of human societies and cultures from a historical and global perspective. The major point of departure for analysis and description is “holism”: social, political, economic and religious processes are treated as integrated parts of an overall system which governs individual´s world views. Social anthropology focuses on both traditional and modern societies and thereby contributes to the understanding of cultural variation and similarities as well as to processes of local and global change. It offers, thereby, “answers” to important questions such as the effects of globalisation upon society and culture, development policies, migration and immigration issues, and the construction of ethnic, gender, and sexual identity. Courses in social anthropology combine theory and practice. Actual instruction includes lectures, seminars, films and practical field exercises.

Dr Garry Marvin, a tutor in Social Anthropology, is an award-winning documentary film-maker. Students are encouraged to carry out a small-scale ethnographic project under supervision.
    Social anthropologists engage in the fascinating study of human societies in all their diversity and complexity, from the smallest groups to mass western social systems. The programme focuses on social issues such as variations in family structures, cultural traditions, gender and sexuality, and religious, political and economic systems.

    ====Boasian anthropology====
    [[Franz Boas]] established academic anthropology in the United States in opposition to this sort of evolutionary perspective. Boasian anthropology was politically active and suspicious of research dictated by the U.S. government and wealthy patrons. It was rigorously empirical and skeptical of overgeneralizations and attempts to establish universal laws. Boas studied immigrant children to demonstrate that biological race was not immutable, and that human conduct and behavior resulted from nurture, rather than nature.
    Boas used his positions at [[Columbia University]] and the [[American Museum of Natural History]] to train and develop multiple generations of students. His first generation of students included [[Alfred Kroeber]], [[Robert Lowie]], [[Edward Sapir]] and [[Ruth Benedict]], who each produced richly detailed studies of indigenous North American cultures. They provided a wealth of details used to attack the theory of a single evolutionary process. Kroeber and Sapir's focus on Native American languages helped establish [[linguistics]] as a truly general science and free it from its historical focus on [[Indo-European languages]].
