From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The social sciences are a group of academic disciplines that study human aspects of the world. Social Sciences includes anthropology archaeology economics geography ... psychology , and sociology They are different from the arts and humanities as for them scientific method is important. Most of the social sciences require doing a lot of research , such as making surveys . Such research is called "social research". Some subjects, such as history , are sometimes social sciences and sometimes humanties. The term "social sciences" has been used for over 200 years and mostly originates from a thinker named Auguste Comte . Many of the fields of social science have come about since then. In America, much of the thought and practice of social science came from the University of Chicago and other universities.

The social sciences are a group of academic disciplines that study human aspects of the world. They differ from the arts and humanities in that the social sciences tend to emphasize the use of the scientific method in the study of humanity, including quantitative and qualitative methods. The social sciences, in studying subjective, inter-subjective and objective or structural aspects of society, are traditionally referred to as soft sciences . This is in contrast to hard sciences , such as the natural sciences , which may focus exclusively on objective aspects of nature. The word "science" is older than its modern use, which is as a short-form for "natural science". Uses of the word "science", in contexts other than those of the natural sciences, are historically valid, so long as they are describing an art or organized body of knowledge which can be taught objectively. The use of the word "science" is not therefore always an attempt to claim that the subject in question ought to stand on the same footing of inquiry as a natural science. Read more

      Welcome
      Alessandro Duranti
Dean of Social Sciences The contemporary world is changing at a rapid pace and in often dramatic ways. Ordinary citizens as well as leaders and the social institutions they run are in great need of accurate documentation and solid theories of the social, cultural, and environmental conditions that make change likely, unlikely, predictable, or inevitable. Over the last one hundred years the social sciences have developed tools to provide highly reliable analyses of societal challenges and problems, at both the micro-level of everyday interaction and at the macro-level of socio-economic events that impact communities and organizations.
The Division of Social Sciences at UCLA, with its stellar faculty and highly ranked departments and programs, offers unique opportunities for undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate education in African American studies, American Indian studies, anthropology, archaeology, Asian American studies, Chicana and Chicano studies, communication studies, economics, geography, history, political science, sociology, and women's studies. In each of these fields, human diversity is studied and celebrated from interdisciplinary perspectives that integrate the social sciences with one another and with the departments in the humanities, life sciences, and physical sciences, as well as in the professional schools.
