Thousands of students take social sciences courses with the OU each year. The appeal is broad because the many subjects that come under the social sciences umbrella provide fascinating insights into everyday life in our communities, families and workplaces. Studying our undergraduate social sciences courses you’ll engage with some of the most compelling and contested questions in contemporary society: How do we communicate with each other? Why do places carry meaning for people? What are our rights as citizens? Why are we so fascinated by crime? What shapes our identity and why? Our social sciences courses will stimulate your curiosity, encourage you to ask questions and challenge assumptions, and help you understand yourself – and the world we live in – more deeply. You’ll also develop a whole range of different skills that will be valuable in your personal life, and in your job.
Where to start in Social Sciences
Whether you want a qualification or not, we recommend you start your studies at Level 1. But choosing the right type of course at Level 1 is very important.

    Note from the Editor
After careful evaluation of the journal's past policy of unlimited access to both current and archived issues in light of a move to market the journal as an e-journal (as well as a print journal), it was determined that a sliding wall of restricted access to the two most current issues would be instituted. Effective immediately, nonsubscribers will continue to enjoy full access to all files in the archives but will have limited access to current issues of the journal. The exception to this rule is that all scholia content requires a current subscription to the journal. Subscribers, however, will continue to be able to access electronically the full content of current issues by typing a username and password at the login prompt.
