    Mission
The social sciences department at Truckee Meadows Community College provides students with a sense of the importance of cultural influences, a sense of history within the scope of changing cultural themes, and a sense of their own worth as human beings. These understandings are refined through a sound curriculum in the behavioral sciences, which explains variations in human behavior based on theoretical models, instruction in research methods used by contemporary social scientists, and a special focus on interdisciplinary connections among topical social issues. As a group, we are committed to the excellence in the classroom delivered by instructors with deep and up-to-date knowledge of their subject and an understanding of the science of pedagogy.
    Vision
The social sciences department seeks to offer courses and programs that become the first choice of Washoe County residents at the 100- and 200-level.

College of Social Sciences
Message from the Dean Welcome, Our faculty is comprised of teacher-scholars who stay abreast of, and contribute to research in their academic fields, but who have a primary commitment to teaching.  Our real heroes, however, are the alumni; once students in the college, they have gone on to make significant contributions in the community, state, and nation.  Click on the “alumni” button to read profiles of recipients of our “Outstanding Alumni” awards for the last few years. In addition to strong departments with discipline-specific initiatives, the College of Social Sciences oversees some important inter-disciplinary efforts.  In this respect, our top three college priorities are (1) immigration, (2) globalization, and (3) the social science study of technology.  The college regularly hosts conferences, symposia, and lectures on these topics.  Students, alumni, and community members are invited to participate.  We also seek outside funding in the form of grants, contracts, and donations to further our research and student experience in these areas.  Consistent with our goal to involve students in research efforts, the College of Social Sciences manages the inter-disciplinary Survey and Policy Research Institute in partnership with the College of Business.  Also, our faculty and students are heavily involved in such “town-gown” initiatives as SJSU’s CommUniverCity, a cooperative effort to re-vitalize a downtown neighborhood near campus.

Economics The economics program at UW-Platteville is designed to bridge the gap between liberal and vocational education. In fulfilling requirements for the economics major, the student will master the analytical core of economics as well as functional areas of business and behavioral sciences and the analytical approach to problem solving. Environmental Earth Science The Environmental Science minor is an interdisciplinary program designed to give students in the sciences, engineering, reclamation, agriculture, geography, industry, biology, sociology, political science, education, and others a broad background in the many aspects of the environment. The minor is designed to supplement students' careers so that they will be better equipped to function in today's society where the environment is of prime importance. Geography Modern geography is concerned with the associations on earth of physical, economic and social factors. It makes an attempt to observe, analyze and understand the spatial organization of these phenomena. The discipline deals with people and their settlements, cultural characteristics and economic activities, as well as with the natural factors of the environment such as landforms, climate, soils, vegetation, animals and minerals. Geology A geology minor is part of our curriculum. Geology is an integral part of the Reclamation major and of engineering.
