83. Polymetric Analysis
An alternative way to assess subject condition in social sciences.
http://www.burcet.net/jbl/lleixa/polymeters.htm
Measuring paradoxical reality
Presenting polymetric analysis Josep Burcet © 1995
revised © 2002
contact Introduction Classical techniques for sample analysis in social sciences are built on the assumption according to which subjects under observation have attributes instead of paradoxes. So, measurement is addressed to assess if such attributes are present. Conventional analysis does not observe to what extent paradoxes are present and how they act. Nevertheless, paradoxes occur very often in complex reality, like human individuals, groups and other sort of cultural artifacts. For instance, attitudes towards computers, new communications and, in general, fast emerging technology are paradoxical in the sense that the same person may feel attraction and repulsion, hope and fear, anger and appeasement. People may feel that way sequentially and, even, simultaneously. This means that each subject in a sample may be characterized by the presence of antagonistic attributes and, what is more important, he/she will behave under the influence of such paradoxes.

Center for Sociocybernetics Studies Bonn
The Center for Sociocybernetics Studies Bonn was founded 2008, and grew out of the Fraunhofer Institut für Intelligente Analyse- und Informationssysteme (IAIS) . It is part of the Association "Cultures of Knowledge" ("Wissenskulturen e.V."). The research focus of the center is the application of systems thinking and cybernetic principles in order to analyse and handle social phenomena regarding their complexity and dynamics. The following aspects can be emphasised that may be seen as characteristic of our research approach:
  • Systems: Research interest focused on handling complexity. A systemic view is an observation attempting to trace the diversity of interaction in reality instead of analytically isolating individual causal relations and exploring them in their entire depth. Systems are defined by a certain form of distinction from their environment. Processuality: Cybernetics "treats not things but ways of behaving. It does not ask 'What is a thing?’ but ‘What does it do?'" (Ashby 1956). It is not the nature, the properties, the materiality of objects that forms the centre of its interest but their forms of operation.

It is based primarily on the findings of the 2004 and 2005 rounds of the South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS), which involved interviewing a nationally representative sample of more than 5000 individuals aged 16 years and older. The volume is structured according to three thematic sections. The first section on race, class and politics examines the public’s views on issues such as national priorities, racial redress, local government, and includes an in-depth examination of youth attitudes. The second section addresses perceptions about poverty, inequality and service delivery. The final section on societal values focuses on attitudes in relation to religion, the environment, employment, and the fear of crime.

The School is based at the University of East London's new Docklands campus, which incorporates a new Learning Resources Centre, a Multimedia Production Centre (MPC) and is the home of the Knowledge Dock Centre These webpages provide information about the teaching, research, production and other activities of HSS. Information about the latest news and events in the School, including conferences and seminars, can be accessed from the right hand column. Cross-links will sometimes move you from the HSS webpages to another area of UEL's website - be sure to bookmark this site so that you can return to it easily and quickly.
