... e Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity , either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Commercial CSP plants were first developed in the 1980s, and the 354 MW SEGS CSP installation is the largest solar power plant in the world and is located in the Mojave Desert of California. The 80 MW Sarnia Photovoltaic Power Plant in Canada , is the world’s largest photovoltaic plant . Experimental approaches to solar power include concentrated photovoltaics systems, thermovoltaic devices, and space-based solar power Solar power is an intermittent energy source , meaning that solar power is not available at all times, and is normally supplemented by storage or another energy source, for example with wind power and hydropower

1. What Is Solar Energy? Solar energy is energy that comes from the sun. Every day the sun radiates, or sends out, an enormous amount of energy. The sun radiates more energy in one second than people have used since the beginning of time! Where does all this energy come from? It comes from within the sun itself. Like other stars, the sun is a big gas ball made up mostly of hydrogen and helium. The sun generates energy in its core in a process called nuclear fusion. During nuclear fusion, the sun's extremely high pressure and hot temperature cause hydrogen atoms to come apart and their nuclei (the central cores of the atoms) to fuse or combine. Four hydrogen nuclei fuse to become one helium atom. But the helium atom weighs less than the four nuclei that combined to form it. Some matter is lost during nuclear fusion. The lost matter is emitted into space as radiant energy. It takes millions of years for the energy in the sun's core to make its way to the solar surface, and then just a little over eight minutes to travel the 93 million miles to earth. The solar energy travels to the earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light. Only a small portion of the energy radiated by the sun into space strikes the earth, one part in two billion. Yet this amount of energy is enormous. Every day enough energy strikes the United States to supply the nation's energy needs for one and a half years!

We also have a section where you can have your say, and comment on the trends you are seeing or would like to see. Or perhaps just leave responses to the topics already started. Thankyou for visiting, I hope you enjoy the brief piece on Solar energy below: Solar Energy – Lets heat things up So what’s all the fuss about? Experts and commentators keep on talking about the benefits of solar energy and how it can help solve our increasing energy demands, but why all the noise? Well first of all it’s free and there’s an infinite supply. It produces no air or water pollution, there are no noise issues, it emits no toxins – making it the perfect energy alternative to wood, coal, oil and gas. So before the finite supply of fossil fuel runs out, now is definitely the time to learn how to make the switch to solar. The good news Is by harnessing sunlight and converting it to usable energy we could greatly diminish our reliance on electricity and foreign imports of fossil fuels while limiting the amount of pollutants we send into the atmosphere. Best of all, the key to reduced electricity bills and helping the environment is available at a store near you. Solar panels now come in easy-to-install kits; outdoor lights are wire and hassle-free when powered by solar energy. But the problem with fledgling technologies is actually getting the latest research and up to date information, and solar energy is no different. But that’s where this site comes in.

The Florida Solar Energy Center (FSEC), a world leader in solar energy, has put together a comprehensive primer to solar information. These guides are applicable to Iowa.
Of all the solar energy technologies, photovoltaics (PV) show the greatest promise for worldwide acceptance and application. Their universal appeal lies in the fact that they generate electricity from the sun. Working photovoltaics have no moving parts, are relatively simple in design, need very little maintenance and are environmentally benign. They simply and silently produce electricity whenever they are exposed to light. The following information from the FSEC is a great primer for solar electricity.

The Department of Energy's  Solar Energy Technologies Program , managed by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy , accelerates the development of solar technologies as energy sources for the nation and world. The solar program also educates the public about the value of solar as a secure, reliable, and clean energy choice. Developing technologies that take advantage of the clean abundant energy of the sun is important to reducing greenhouse gasses and helps stimulate the economy.   Photovoltaic cells concentrating solar power technologies  and  solar water heaters  are some of the solar technologies being developed by the Department of Energy.  Photovoltaic cells convert sunlight directly into electricity and are made of semiconductors such as crystalline silicon or various thin-film materials. Photovoltaics can provide tiny amounts of power for watches, large amounts for the electric grid, and everything in between. Concentrating solar power technologies use reflective materials to concentrate the sun's heat energy, which ultimately drives a generator to produce electricity. These technologies include dish/engine systems, parabolic troughs, and central power towers.

The name "solar power" is actually a little misleading. In fact, most of the energy known to man is derived in some way from the sun. When we burn wood or other fuels, we are releasing the stored energy of the sun. In fact, there would be no life on earth without the sun, which provides energy needed for the growth of plants, and indirectly, the existence of all animal life. The solar energy scientists are interested in is energy obtained through the use of solar panels. Although the field of research dealing with this type of solar power is relatively new, bear in mind that man has known about the energy of the sun for thousands of years.

The Energy Story is a general introduction to energy. Chapters explore renewable energy, fossil fuels, electricity, circuits and many other things.
http://www.energyquest.ca.gov/story/chapter15.html
Chapter 15: Solar Energy
We have always used the energy of the sun as far back as humans have existed on this planet. As far back as 5,000 years ago, people "worshipped" the sun. Ra, the sun-god, who was considered the first king of Egypt. In Mesopotamia, the sun-god Shamash was a major deity and was equated with justice. In Greece there were two sun deities, Apollo and Helios. The influence of the sun also appears in other religions - Zoroastrianism, Mithraism, Roman religion, Hinduism, Buddhism, the Druids of England, the Aztecs of Mexico, the Incas of Peru, and many Native American tribes. We know today, that the sun is simply our nearest star. Without it, life would not exist on our planet. We use the sun's energy every day in many different ways. When we hang laundry outside to dry in the sun, we are using the sun's heat to do work drying our clothes. Plants use the sun's light to make food. Animals eat plants for food. And as we learned in Chapter 5, decaying plants hundreds of millions of years ago produced the coal, oil and natural gas that we use today. So, fossil fuels is actually sunlight stored millions and millions of years ago. Indirectly, the sun or other stars are responsible for ALL our energy. Even nuclear energy comes from a star because the uranium atoms used in nuclear energy were created in the fury of a nova - a star exploding.

A Study of the Absorption and Reflection of Solar Energy When Applied to Different Colors
ABSTRACT
The major idea that we state in our hypothesis is that if an object is a darker color, then it will absorb more heat than a lighter colored object will. It also states that if an object is a lighter color, then it will reflect more heat than a darker color.
In order to find out if our hypothesis is true, we had to conduct an experiment. In our experiment we placed a thermometer inside a box. We used four different boxes of different colors, red, yellow, white, and black. The boxes had holes in the top and the walls of the box were to either absorb or reflect heat. We have tested this experiment many times and each time we have proved our hypothesis correct. Each time the darker color absorbed more heat and the thermometer proved that this had happened. And the thermometer also proved that the lighter color reflected more heat because the temperature was lower.
Even though many scientists have done this experiment and proved that what we stated in our hypothesis was true, we still wanted to prove to ourselves that what we stated was a fact, and we also wanted to know to what extent the color of an object affected its ability to absorb or reflect solar energy.
