SOUND Sound appears to be a topic distinct from motion and heat. However, we now understand sound to be an ordered motion of the molecules of the medium through which the sound propagates. The study of sound provides the opportunity to understand wave motion in preparation for the more abstract study of electromagnetic waves. The subject of sound should be of particular interest to anyone who enjoys music[1-7].

Safety Considerations with Sound
Most experiments involving sound are relatively safe except for the hazards not directly associated with the sound as discussed elsewhere. However, it is possible for very intense sounds to permanently damage the ear especially after prolonged exposure[1,2]. Consequently, in the demonstrations described here, the sound intensity should always be kept at a level well below the threshold of pain (see Table 3.1). As a general rule, prolonged exposure to sound levels above 85 dB will cause slight hearing loss and above 90 dB will result in mild to moderate loss. Prolonged exposure to sound levels above 95 dB causes moderate to severe hearing loss. Above 100 dB, even short exposure can cause a permanent loss of hearing.

Sound is a vibration . When something makes a noise it is vibrating, and this causes air molecules around it to vibrate too. These vibrations are transmitted through the air, to our ears, where we perceive them as sound.
You can actually see the effect of sound vibrations with an easy experiment. Get a bowl and cover the top with plastic sandwich wrap. Pull the plastic tight across the top in all directions until it is flat and smooth; tape it tight if necessary. Then sprinkle some salt onto the plastic.
Now get a pot and spoon; hold them near the bowl and hit the bottom of the pot hard with the spoon. You should see the salt jump on the plastic. Try yelling loudly next to the bowl, and you may be able to make the salt jump using the vibrations from your voice.
The loud noise you make is a vibration, which is transmitted through the air, to your ear and also to the plastic. The plastic vibrates, and makes the salt crystals jump! Let's examine how sounds from a vibrating object turn into sound you hear.
How Sound is Made:
When something vibrates, it moves back and forth. A vibrating object could be a speaker on a CD player, or your vocal cords, or the string on a guitar. As the object vibrates, it pushes the air molecules next to it closer together, in patterns corresponding to the movements of the object. These patterns of compressed air molecules bump into the ones next to them, passing on the pattern. In this way the original pattern of vibrations is sent through the air, as molecules continue to bump into their neighbours.

    Overview of Sound Waves
by Ron Kurtus (revised 1 December 2009) Sound is a series of longitudinal or compression waves that move through air or other materials. Sound does not travel in a vacuum. Like any waveform, sound has the characteristics of wavelength, frequency, amplitude and speed or velocity. Sound waves are created by the vibration of some object, like the cone in a radio loudspeaker. The waves are detected when they cause a detector to vibrate. Questions you may have include:
    • What is a description of sound? What are the characteristics of sound waves? How is sound created and detected?
