Expedition 5 International Space Station The International Space Station came into being 1998 December 13 at 20:25 GMT (15:25 EST, and December 14 at 00:25 in Moscow) when the Zarya/Unity combination was released into free flight by Space Shuttle Endeavour. This diary chronicles the major activities in the first four years after the launch of Zarya. It is divided into sections representing major stages of building and occupation. Current events can be found in the Orbital Events calendar (also available from the right hand menu). The headings in the left menu correspond with the following paragraphs. Zarya and Unity - covers the first elements going into space and the work done by space shuttle crews in preparing the station for habitation. Zvezda Arrives - the third module finds its way into space and links up with Zarya, Shuttle crews continue to build on to the station by adding the Z-1 Truss and connecting PMA-3 to Unity. Expedition 1 - Bill Shepherd, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev go aboard to become the station's first crew while Shuttle visits add further elements to the ISS including the Destiny module.

Space Digest International Archives Welcome to the Space Digest International Archives. The creation of this archive was a joint effort of Dale Amon of QUB and Genesis Project Ltd (and formerly of CMU); Ted Anderson (formerly of LLNL, now with Transarc); Eugene Miya of NASA Ames; and Mark Maimone of International Space University and CMU. Thanks are also due to many others for ideas, discussion and assistance over the years. This list would certainly be a long one, but special thanks are due to Bill Higgins of FermiLab and Henry Spencer of the University of Toronto. This archive contains a nearly complete sequence from V1 to the present. It is a combination of all other known archives and has been carefully crosschecked. It should be considered the definitive Space Digest archive. Accept no substitutes. It is hoped that someday disk storage will become available so that we can put a hyperlinked and index-searchable version of this valuable space data resource onto the web. Be forwarned. As the years go by these files get big. Very big. Very, VERY big. How big is that? The Volume 17 file is 15.6MB compressed... Caveat Emptor. The most authoritative research predicts peak global oil production will occur sometime between 2008 and 2018, based on by F. Robelius' dissertation Private UK studies by the Industry Taskforce on Peak Oil and Energy Security have projected the production peak year to be approximately 2012 to 2013. Regardless of the precise year, Washington continues doing nothing on the scale required. It will take decades to cleanly repower the world - after we begin. Copper, aluminum and iron are minerals that can be recycled, but fossil fuels are gone after they have been burned. We must prepare to use lower grade ores, which will require more and cleaner energy. Replacing oil with coal continues to exacerbate CO and other environmental problems.

Space Exploration has been the quest to use space travel to discover the nature
of the universe beyond the earth. The first Space Exploration started in 1957 with
the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, sent into space by the Soviets.
Since ancient times people have dreamed of leaving their home planet and
exploring other worlds not known to man. Every era through out history has
had a belief as to what the "heavens" are made form. The Greeks believed that
the stars and space were made of a material called "Quitenses", and other
culture once thought that the stars were made of their peoples passed away. We know now what stars are really made of; they are made of various

Russia To Bring Space Shuttle Back From The Grave
Buran was mothballed in the early 1990s by the cash-strapped Russian government. But with the satellite launching business expanding and the International Space Station running behind schedule, Russian space officials think Buran's time has come. by Barry Fox for New Scientist
Baikonur - June 30, 2001
Russia plans to reassert itself as a major power in space by resurrecting the Buran space shuttle, a relic of the Soviet era. It will pay for the development programme in part by taking more space tourists like Dennis Tito up to the space station. Buran was mothballed in the early 1990s by the cash-strapped Russian government. But with the satellite launching business expanding and the International Space Station running behind schedule, Russian space officials think Buran's time has come. Last week Energia, the state company which built Buran, opened its hangars at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to show Western aerospace engineers that Buran is ready and waiting for relaunch. "There is a future for this programme," says Leonid Gurushkin, director of launch operations at Baikonur.
