21. SQUID Magnetometry, Harnessing The Power Of Tiny Magnetic Fields | Spring 2003 |
Lab researchers have developed a MEG helmet that uses 155 squids to measure the brain s tiny magnetic fields.

Los Alamos National Laboratory Lab Home Phone Search SQUID Magnetometry Dateline Los Alamos Mesa View SQUID Magnetometry Muon Radiography ... PDF Print Version Lab researchers are pioneering new medical uses for SQUIDsãsuperconducting quantum interference devicesãfrom pinpointing brain tissue that causes epilepsy to monitoring fetal heartbeats. Measurements associated with the neural currents in the brain can be used to diagnose epilepsy, stroke, and mental illness, as well as to study brain function. One way to observe these tiny electrical currents is to measure the magnetic fields they produce outside the skull, a technique called magnetoencephalography, or MEG. The traditional way to monitor the brainês electrical activity is with electroencephalography (EEG), which requires gluing as many as 150 electrodes to the scalp. MEG measures brain currents as precisely as EEG does but without physical contact, making it possible to screen large numbers of patients quickly and easily. MEG is also insensitive to the conductivities of the scalp, skull, and brain, which can affect EEG measurements. Enter the SQUID
Measuring the brainês magnetic fields is not easy, however, because they are so weak. Just above the skull, they have strengths of 0.1 to 1 picotesla, less than a hundred-millionth of Earthês magnetic field. In fact, brain fields can be measured only with the most sensitive magnetic-field sensor known, the superconducting quantum interference device, or SQUID.

Background
Squid is a proxy server and web cache daemon. It has a wide variety of uses, from speeding up a web server by caching repeated requests, to caching web, DNS and other computer network lookups for a group of people sharing network resources, to aiding security by filtering traffic. Although primarily used for HTTP and FTP, Squid includes limited support for several other protocols including TLS, SSL, Internet Gopher and HTTPS.[1] The development version of Squid (3.1) includes IPv6 and ICAP support. Squid web site claims that if working in front of the server application, it can improve performance by up to four times. Squid is especially efficient in case of (probably unexpected) high traffic to one or several particular pages, as in this case near 100% of caching can be achieved. Squid(software) Be aware that Squid usually provides a WORST case scenario for RAID disks (especially RAID 5). See: Squid FAQ - RAID
Server
At the moment Squid is not included in the firmware of the QNAP. Hopefully it soon will be avaible as a QPKG package so it easily could be installed through the webinterface. But until further notice it has to be installed through ipkg.

A Caribbean Reef Squid Squids have several species, but they have some common characteristics. For instance, all squids have tentacles with suckers, a mouth with a radula , and jet propulsion with the siphon from the mantle. The radulla is a scraping organ in the mouth that scrapes nutrients from food sources. Tentacles are long extensions of specialized tissues from the body that are used for locomotive power and capturing food sources. All squids are

Squids live in all the oceans of the world. Squids are known as "the ice cream cone of the sea" because they are a favorite food of many ocean dwellers. Female squids lay thousands of eggs to support a food chain. Squids have some of the largest eyes, in proportion to their body, in the animal kingdom. Some squid body parts include fins, a mantle, tentacles, suckers, two hearts, gills and ink sacs. Complete the worksheets below to learn more about squids. The Squid is an invertebrate (animal without a backbone) that swims in the oceans. This mollusk is closely related to the octopus. Squid can change the color of their skin to mimic their environment and hide from predators. Squid are soft-bodied cephalopods . They move by squirting water from the mantle through the siphon, using a type of jet propulsion. When in danger, squid squirt a cloud of dark ink in order to confuse their attacker and allow the squid to escape. Squid reproduce by releasing eggs into the water. Some squid eggs are free-floating, others are attached to seaweed or to the ocean floor. Anatomy : Squid range from 1 to 60 ft (0.3 to 18 m) long. The biggest squid is the
