NEW!
The PEER NGA Database version 2 of this database is now available. It includes a larger set of records, more extensive meta-data and some corrections to information on this site. At this time, the new site contains only acceleration time history files.
About This Database
The PEER Strong Motion Database contains 1557 records from 143 earthquakes from tectonically active regions, processed by Dr. Walt Silva of Pacific Engineering using publicly available data from Federal, State, and private providers of strong motion data. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company , the California Energy Commission , and the California Department of Transportation have sponsored the development of the strong motion database as part of the PEER Directed Studies program on lifelines. The National Information Service for Earthquake Engineering , sponsored by the National Science Foundation , is responsible for programming and distribution of the database. The processing of the strong motion records in the PEER database is in general different than the processing done by the agency that collected the data. Although the processed records may be different, the differences should be small within the frequency passband common to both processing procedures.

City of San Francisco Municipal Reports on the Earthquake and Fire (return link) The U. S. Geological Survey Report on the
San Francisco Earthquake of April 18, 1906 Preface to the 1907 report by Joseph A. Holmes (excerpts) Immediately afterwards there was a decision to investigate the effects of earthquake and fire on buildings and materials of construction. Accordingly, on April 19 Richard L. Humphrey was sent to San Francisco for this purpose, as secretary of the National Advisory Board on Fuels and Structural Materials and representing the structural materials division of the United States Geological Survey.
At the request of the President, Capt. John Stephen Sewell, Corps of Engineers, United States Army, was sent to San Francisco on a similar errand by the War Department under order of April 23, 1906.
Frank Soul, dean of the college of civil engineering of the University of California, was asked in the fall of 1906 to prepare a report on the general earthquake and fire conditions. G. K. Gilbert, of the United States Geological Survey, also a member of the California earthquake investigation commission, who was near San Francisco at the time of the disaster was asked to prepare a brief special report on the phenomena of the earthquake.
The authors also are responsible for the excellent photographs. Each has the name of the photographer.

Recent Earthquakes
A M7.1 earthquake struck the east of the South Island on Saturday, September 4 at 04:35 (2010-10-03 16:35 UTC). The epicentre was located approximately 40 km west of the Christchurch CBD, at a depth of 10 km. There was widespread damage due to liquefaction in Christchurch and nearby townships, but the only significant structural damage was to unreinforced masonry structures. Canterbury has been in a recovery phase since 16 September. The NZSEE Clearinghouse has a large number of reports, photographs and other resources about the event.
