Surveying the Uses of Trigonometry
Some people just do not know how to have fun. They think everything has to be useful. Luckily, the sine, cosine, and tangent functions do have a lot of real-world uses. Surveyors use the tangent function a lot. For example, they can use trigonometry to figure out the distance across rivers. The tangent of 31 degrees is about 0.60. That means that the distance across the river is 0.6 times 400 meters, or 240 meters. Real world alert! Index

2007 National Readjustment of the North American Datum 1983 - V08G / 3 hrs Order This Course What You Should Know about Registering Online This program traces the development of the horizontal and vertical datum of the United States developed by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and its predecessor agencies, the Coast and Geodetic Survey, US Coast Survey and Survey of the Coast. The presentation will include a detailed discussion of the North American Datum of 1983 and its various iterations, High Accuracy Reference Network (HARN), the inclusion of Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) and the relationship of NAD 83 to the International Terrestrial Frame (ITRF) and the World Geodetic System of 1984 (WGS 84). The widespread implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) by state government has caused several states to consider the adoption of standard projection to facilitate statewide mapping and efficient data management. GIS require a statewide spatial database to be stored in a common projection or coordinate system to function properly. State Plane Coordinates (SPC83) is the best-known system of the standard projection in the United States and enjoys great support among surveyors and engineers. State Plane Coordinates, however, have the disadvantage of dividing states into separate zones with different projections making the existing state plane system impractical for use as the standard projection for statewide databases. Should a statewide projection be the future of an Alabama coordinate system? This topic will be discussed.

    • Article History Modern surveying Primary Contributors: John Lyman John Wilfrid Wright ARTICLE from Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Its principal modern uses are in the fields of transportation, building, land use, and communications. Surveying is divided into the categories of plane surveying (mapping small areas) and geodetic surveying (mapping large areas of the globe). The Romans are said to have used the plane table, which consists of a drawing board mounted on a tripod or other support and a straightedge along which lines are drawn. It was the first device capable of recording or establishing angles. With the publication of logarithmic tables in 1620, portable angle-measuring instruments, called topographic instruments, or theodolites, came into use; they included pivoted arms for sighting and could be used for measuring both horizontal and vertical angles. Two revolutionary 20th-century innovations were photogrammetry (mapping from aerial photographs) and electronic distance measurement, including the use of the laser.
