The term was used by the Brundtland Commission which coined what has become the most often-quoted definition of sustainable development as development that "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Sustainable development ties together concern for the carrying capacity of natural systems with the social challenges facing humanity. As early as the 1970s "sustainability" was employed to describe an

Readings and Class Discussion on Sustainability and Sustainable Development
Noha Shawki
Summary
Students are asked to read book chapters and/or journal articles about the efforts of international intergovernmental organizations to promote sustainability and sustainable development. The readings are completed prior to the class meeting during which they are discussed. The discussion of the readings will focus on applying the theoretical approaches to the study of international organizations to the study of organizations promoting sustainability.
Learning Goals
The goal of this activity is to help students apply theoretical approaches to the study of international organizations to specific organizations working on sustainability issues.
Context for Use
This activity is developed for a course entitled "International Organizations". It is a 300-level course in political science/international relations. The class is capped at 15 students, and most of the students enrolled in it are juniors and seniors majoring in political science/international relations. The course is designed as a seminar and has a strong focus on readings and discussions.
By the time this activity takes place, students will have read theoretical articles about international organizations and their role in global governance. Some of the key questions discussed include: What is the contribution of international organizations to global governance? Are international organizations effective? Under what circumstances do they have impact? What is the unique contribution of international organizations to the formation of global public policy? This activity is designed to apply these questions to the efforts and initiatives of international organizations in the area of sustainability and sustainable development. It will take place over two class meetings. One half to two thirds of each of these class meetings will be devoted to this activity.

3 Sustainability in context
Sustainability and sustainable development For some 40 years there has been increasing awareness of environmental issues and that global economic development trends are not sustainable. The Kyoto Protocol and the European Union Burden Sharing Agreement Definitions of sustainable development are numerous and diverse. However, the most commonly quoted definition of sustainable development is contained within Our Common Future (1987 ) The Report of the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission) is as follows: The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Annual Report for 2004-05 illustrates succinctly the intertwined nature of these components. Sustainable development education The SDE Network is the Scottish network for organisations and individuals involved in sustainable development education The definition of SDE aligns well with the Brundtland definition of sustainable development shown above and reflects the three key components of sustainability: environment, society and economy. It is the definition of sustainable development education used in the SDE survey. Key knowledge, skills and attitudes in sustainable development education

http://ag.arizona.edu/~lmilich/susdev.html
A Public Policy Context for Sustainability and Sustainable Development The problem with sustainability is that no matter which way we choose to look at it, it invokes issues of intergenerational equity (e.g., World Commission on Environment and Development, 1987; Jodha, 1992). The problem with intergenerational equity is that human behavior, whether through need or through avarice, largely discounts the needs of future generations. How we might break our current cycles of unsustainable behavior is the subject of this essay. Sustainability as a Value Sustainability is best recognized as a value - a momentous shift in consciousness whereby intergenerational equity is accepted as an overriding ethic.( a Criticism that this definition is too loose to be applicable to practical concerns fails to recognize that such an ethic must be, by its very nature, a general command (Dovers, 1989). Such criticism is also myopic. A sustainability ethic may be a utopian vision, but it does offer a useful metric in the policy arena, separating those policies that can be recommended from those that should be resisted. Other critics suggest that a focus on intergenerational inequity denies the existence of intra generational inequity today. This is also incorrect; nowhere does the ethic stipulate that policies with sustainability as a value should remain unchecked for internal consistency. Justice tomorrow does not preclude working for justice today.
