SUSTAINABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: HISTORICAL AND CONCEPTUAL ... Edit SUSTAINABILITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: HISTORICAL AND CONCEPTUAL REVIEW Citations: 42 Desta Mebratu The vagueness of the concept of sustainable development, coupled with its increasing importance in national, international and corporate policies, has led to a large political battle for influence over our future by linking interpretation to the concept. This has resulted in a wide variety of definitions and interpreta- tions that are skewed towards institutional and group prerogatives rather than compounding the essence of the concept, which has been inherent in traditional beliefs and practices. A systematic analysis of representative definitions and interpretations presented in this article reveals that most of the contemporary definitions focus on specific elements while failing to capture the whole spec- trum. Such a historical and conceptual analysis focusing on the analysis of the metaphorical and epistemological basis of the different definitions is believed to be the first step towards developing a concrete body of theory on sustainability and sustainable development. © 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.

As in every business sector Sustainable Development is a hot topic in the property industry - but what actually is it? Sustainable Development has been defined as "development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
All too often it is confused with purely environmental issues and the property sector still has much hard work ahead if it is to fully address the "three pillars of sustainability": environmental, economic and social. Revolution Public Relations' staff can boast unique experience in achieving international recognition of client's achievements in the area of sustainable development. In 2003 Revolution Public Relation's Andrew Barber successfully applied for the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development on behalf of the Greenham Common Trust for its sustainable regeneration of New Greenham Park , the 150-acre business park on the site of the former RAF Greenham Common airbase in Berkshire. Receiving this prestigious international award remains a unique achievement in the commercial property sector and it was bestowed upon the Trust for a second time in 2008. Once again Andrew led the application process.

Abstract:
This paper analyses the discourse of sustainability and sustainable development in the non-financial reports of the worlds largest corporations. It investigates uses of the concepts and the rationales corporations give to engage with them. The most striking finding is that so many of the corporations opt to treat sustainability and sustainable development as given and unproblematic instead of addressing the fundamental problems of todays practice or the dilemmas of the concepts.

Sustainable Development is often an over-used word, but goes to the heart of tackling a number of inter-related global issues such as poverty, inequality, hunger and environmental degradation. In theory, development that is sustainable and not damaging to the planet is very possible. Of course though, in reality there are a lot of politics and challenges involved as highlighted throughout this site. This section is woefully small to start off with, and hardly covers the issues in enough depth, though over time, I hope to add more articles to the ones below.
