Home Sustainable development and community resilience "Sustainability, is better seen as a measure of the relationship between the community as learners and their environments, rather than an externally designed goal to be achieved" (Sriskandarajah et al, 1991). All too often "sustainability" is seen as an outcome - a tangible situation that we strive to define and arive at - rather than a process of "planned change" ... or "managed learning". This process must involve the building of sustainable relationships between people, and between people and their environment. To do this requires the development of learning societies ... capable of adapting to feedback, with improved abilities to improve decision making through the sharing of information, communication and understanding. As Allen (2001 ) points out, Agenda 21 clearly identified information, integration, and participation as key building blocks to help countries achieve development that recognises these interactions. It emphasises that in sustainable development everyone is a user and provider of information. It stresses the need to change from old sector-centred ways of doing business to new approaches that involve cross-sectoral co-ordination and the integration of environmental and social concerns into all development processes. Furthermore, Agenda 21 emphasises that broad public participation in decision making is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving sustainable development.

Industrial activities over the past century have caused serious ecological and environmental problems. (Shrivastava, P, 1995, Environmental Technologies and Competitive Advantage, Strategic Management Journal, Vol 16 183-200) The list includes: Global Warming Acid Rain Ozone Depletion Natural Resource Scarcity Air Pollution Toxic Wastes Loss of Biodiversity Industrial Accidents These problems, and in particular climate change are affected by an increase in CO2 therefore there is a need for the population as a whole to change to more sustainable ways to combat this problem. The following diagram highlights the key interactions that cause climate change and shows that if these issues were addressed in both business, and the community at large the problem of climate change could be significantly lessened. Ecosystems all over the world have also been affected in varying degrees by industrial pollution of various types. Even Antarctia has been polluted, so far-reaching has been the spread of industrial pollutants. (Flavin, C, 1996, Environmental Management Systems, Organisational Strategies for Positive Action to Protect the Environment, MSc Innovation Studies). Businesses need to invest in the future, not only not only in terms of their business, but also in terms of the environment in which they operate. Sustainability and Sustainable Development were the buzz words that emerged from the Brundtland Commissions' report however the meaning of each is different.
