Thunderstorms Thunderstorm Basics Responding to Thunderstorms Thunderstorms can occur any time of day year round, but are most common in the summer afternoons and evenings. The National Weather Service considers a thunderstorm severe if it produces hail at least three-quarters of an inch in diameter, has winds of 58 miles per hour or higher or produces a tornado. All thunderstorms produce lightning, which can be deadly. Virginia averages 35 to 45 thunderstorm days per year.

While thunder won't hurt you—lightning will! So it's important to pay attention when you hear thunder. Thunderstorms happen in every state, and every thunderstorm has lightning. Lightning can strike people and buildings and is very dangerous. Thunderstorms affect small areas when compared with hurricanes and winter storms. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes. Nearly 1,800 thunderstorms are happening at any moment around the world. That's 16 million a year! Despite their small size, all thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, which kills more people each year than tornadoes. Strong winds, hail, and tornadoes are also dangers associated with some thunderstorms. You can estimate how many miles away a storm is by counting the number of seconds between the flash of lightning and the clap of thunder.

Thunderstorms and Lightning
In the United States, lightning kills 300 people and injures 80 on average, each year. All thunderstorms produce lightning and all have the potential for danger. Those dangers can include tornadoes, strong winds, hail, wildfires and flash flooding, which is responsible for more fatalities than any other thunderstorm-related hazard. Lightning's risk to individuals and property is increased because of its unpredictability, which emphasizes the importance of preparedness. It often strikes outside of heavy rain and may occur as far as 10 miles away from any rainfall. Most lightning deaths and injuries occur when people are caught outdoors in the summer months during the afternoon and evening.

Severe Thunderstorms and Warning Systems
What is a severe thunderstorm?
Literally thousands of thunderstorms occur each year in NSW and the ACT. Although all thunderstorms produce lightning, that is a danger itself, not all of them are "severe" or likely to produce damage. Severe Thunderstorms are defined as those that produce any of the following:
  • HAILSTONES with a diameter of 2cm (the size of a $2 coin) or more WIND gusts of 90km/h or greater Intense rainfall resulting in FLASH FLOODING TORNADOES
When is a severe thunderstorm warning issued?
  • A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when existing thunderstorms are likely to develop into a severe thunderstorm A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is also issued when a severe thunderstorm is reported, or there is strong evidence of a severe thunderstorm, and it is expected to persist

What is a thunderstorm?

A thunderstorm is a storm with lightning and thunder. Its produced by a cumulonimbus cloud, usually producing gusty winds, heavy rain and sometimes hail.
What causes a thunderstorm?
The basic ingredients used to make a thunderstorm are moisture, unstable air and lift. You need moisture to form clouds and rain. You need unstable air that is relatively warm and can rise rapidly. Finally, you need lift. This can form from fronts, sea breezes or mountains.
When are thunderstorms most likely to occur?
Thunderstorms can occur year-round and at all hours. But they are most likely to happen in the spring and summer months and during the afternoon and evening hours.
How many thunderstorms are there every day?
It is estimated that there are around 1,800 thunderstorms that occur across our planet every day.

THUNDERSTORMS AND LIGHTNING
It is estimated at any given moment nearly 2,000 thunderstorms are in progress over the earth's surface, and lightning strikes the earth 100 times each second. There are about 45,000 thunderstorms daily and 16 million annually around the world. There are at least 100,000 thunderstorms annually across the United States. Statistics from 1959-82 for the United States show that 2,430 people have lost their lives, and 5,882 have been injured by lightning, an average of a little over 100 people killed and about 250 injured each year. Property loss is estimated in the hundreds of millions of dollars annually. At the U.S. Commerce Department's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), scientists monitor and predict these storms. NOAA's National Weather Service keeps a round-the-clock vigil on atmospheric conditions and issues watches and warnings for severe thunderstorms. Project officials at NOAA's Environmental Research Laboratories seek new tools and improved understanding of thunderstorm processes. Scientists probe storms with radar, satellites, lightning detective devices, laser beams, and aircraft.

United States Search and Rescue Task Force Thunderstorms
The key ingredient that defines a thunderstorm is lightning. Since lightning creates thunder, a storm with lightning is called a thunderstorm.
Thunderstorms occur when large air masses rise quickly into the atmosphere, forming huge cumulonimbus clouds. Severe air currents inside the clouds cause water droplets and ice crystals to crash into one another continually, and the friction between these particles creates static electricity in the cloud. Over time, opposite charges build between the top and bottom of the cloud, and the bottom of the cloud and the earth. When these opposing charges become intense, a gigantic spark occurs (lightning) which jumps the gap between the cloud and the earth. The thunder accompanying lightning is the noise produced by the discharge.
What is Lightning?
  • The action of rising and descending air within a thunderstorm separates positive and negative charges. Water and ice particles also affect the distribution of electrical charge. Lightning results from the buildup and discharge of electrical energy between positively and negatively charged areas.

Strong winds from a severe thunderstorm appear to be bending out the channel of this lightning bolt. The fast moving wind storm moved through western Oklahoma late at night. The cloud feature along the leading edge is called a gust front or shelf cloud. As it passes the winds shift and become much cooler. This particular storm line had 60 m.p.h. winds. Want to learn more about the lightning and understand what's going on in these storms? Kids can learn more about lightning by visiting sources such as the National Geographic Page on lightning . Lightning extending from thunderstorms into space is a new area of study and may be observed in special situations involving very clear dark skies.

Cloud to Ground Strikes Cloud to ground lightning looks the best when it's out of the rain. The branching shows up best when there is no rain to blur the image. In the left shot taken near Dodge City, Kansas the precipitation is actually virga, it's evaporating before it hits the ground. Note the difference in the top of the lightning and the detail near the ground. The better contrast is lower in the image and out of the rain. The shot on the right is mostly rain free so the branching shows up throughout the shot.
Using Lightning To Illuminate the Tornado Lightning is common in a tornadic thunderstorm, but often after the tornado is on the ground the lightning diminishes. This was a lucky shot, well not total luck, I was there. It's really hard to do this, as I have tried for years. On numerous occasions I have had a tornado in the lightning and something goes wrong to keep me from getting it. One time I had two tornadoes going on simultaneously in the lightning east of Wichita, Kansas. I broke out of the storm too close to the tornadoes and they roared by before I could get set up. For this shot I was on a little hand tripod setting on the car hood, which is fast to set up. Also, it wasn't raining and that made it possible to stand outside without soaking the equipment.

Home Thunderstorms Tornadoes Glossary ... Weather Maps Thunderstorms What is a thunderstorm? A thunderstorm is a weather pattern that includes thunder, lightning, and usually rain or hail. It can lead to tornadoes The basic need for thunderstorms is warm, moist air, so they happen most often in the tropical areas. Over land, thunderstorms strike more often in the afternoon and early evening since the ground heats up from the sun during the day. They occur more frequently on hot summer days than in cold weather. Causes of Thunderstorms
  • Moist air, heated by the sun, rises which causes an updraft of air.
  • As warm air rises, water in the air forms clouds.
  • When water vapor in the cloud gets too heavy, it falls as rain.
  • Conflict between the warm updraft of air and cool water in the clouds causes thunder and lightning.
  • The severity of the thunderstorm depends on the difference in temperature.
What causes lightning? What causes thunder? In a cloud, swift air separates water droplets, causing electrical charges.

    Introduction
    Red sprites and blue jets are upper atmospheric optical phenomena associated with thunderstorms that have only recently been documented using low light level television technology. The first images of a sprite were accidently obtained in 1989 (Franz et al. , 1990). Beginning in 1990, about twenty images have been obtained from the space shuttle (Vaughan et al. , 1992; Boeck et al. Since then, video sequences of well over a thousand sprites have been captured. These include measurements from the ground ( Lyons, 1994; Winckler, 1995) and from aircraft (Sentman and Wescott, 1993;
