Manifold topology, automorphisms of manifolds (Kedra, Weiss, Reis, Miller, Borat). In Kedra's research, the manifolds typically carry additional geometric structures such as symplectic structures or a volume form. In his current research, discrete subgroups of automorphism groups of symplectic manifolds have a special place. He employs geometric tools like metrics on groups of smooth automorphisms or quasi-homomorphisms on such groups. Weiss' expertise is mainly in the high-dimensional theory, specifically in classifying automorphisms of high-dimensional manifolds which are homotopic to the identity. But in his recent collaboration with Madsen, Galatius and Tillmann, this background proved very valuable in resolving a deep question about automorphisms of smooth 2-manifolds, the Mumford conjecture. Currently Weiss works with Reis on a project which concerns the rational cohomology of diffeomorphism groups of disks and spheres and relations with singularity theory. Homotopy theory of fusion systems and homotopy theory of compact Lie groups (Levi, Libman, Seeliger). The homotopy theory of fusion systems is a framework for understanding the omotopy and homology behaviour "at a prime p" of the classifying space BG of a finite or compact Lie group G, ainly in terms of the fusion system of G (i.e. the collection of its p-subgroups and homomorphisms between these nduced by restrictions of inner automorphisms of G). One of the high points of the theory is the concept of a "p-local finite group", and more generally a "p-local compact group" due to Broto, Levi and Oliver. This is an abstraction of the combinatorial and categorical properties of fusion systems which does away with the ambient group G. Many of the homotopy properties of BG at the prime p depend only on the p-local group determined by G. Fusion systems also play an important role in the representation theory of finite groups, and there are already many known connections between the algebraic and topological aspects of the theory.

... closed three-manifold is homeomorphic to the three-sphere (in a topologist's sense) , where a three-sphere is simply a generalization of the usual sphere to one dimension compact manifold is homotopy -equivalent to the -sphere iff it is homeomorphic to the sphere . The generalized statement reduces to the original conjecture for topology of manifolds Whitehead link ) to his own theorem. The case of the generalized conjecture is trivial, the case is classical (and was known to 19th century mathematicians), (the original conjecture) appears to have been proved by recent work by G. Perelman (although the proof has not yet been fully verified), was proved by Freedman (1982) (for which he was awarded the 1986 Fields medal was demonstrated by Zeeman (1961), was established by Stallings (1962), and was shown by Smale in 1961 (although Smale subsequently extended his proof to include all The Clay Mathematics Institute included the conjecture on its list of $1 million prize problems. In April 2002, M. J. Dunwoody produced a five-page paper that purports to prove the conjecture. However, Dunwoody's manuscript was quickly found to be fundamentally flawed (Weisstein 2002). A much more promising result has been reported by Perelman (2002, 2003; Robinson 2003). Perelman's work appears to establish a more general result known as the Thurston's geometrization conjecture , from which the Poincaré conjecture immediately follows (Weisstein 2003). Mathematicians familiar with Perelman's work describe it as well thought-out and expect that it will be difficult to locate any substantial mistakes (Robinson 2003, Collins 2004). In fact, Collins (2004) goes so far as to state, "everyone expects [that] Perelman's proof is correct."

For decades, the sphere eversion has been a classic subject for mathematical visualization. Our 1998 video " The Optiverse " shows geometrically optimal eversions created by minimizing elastic bending energy. This paper contrasts these minimax eversions with earlier ones, including those by Morin, Phillips, Max, and Thurston. Our minimax eversions were automatically generated by flowing downhill in energy using Brakke's Evolver. This paper, "The Optiverse" and Other Sphere Eversions , is available here in HTML in two versions: (The color version was formatted by Slavik Jablan for his online journal VisMath, which is available from the US or from Yugoslavia A printable version (typeset in LaTeX) is available (in many formats) as ArXiv e-print math.GT/9905020 An updated LaTeX version (with a few minor corrections) was prepared for publication by Springer in the proceedings of the Sep'00 Maubeuge Colloquium on Math and Art. It is now available here as a PDF file . This version has the highest-resolution images. The book Mathematics and Art: Mathematical Visualization in Art and Education , edited by Claude P. Bruter, will be published in June 2002.
