The Department of Medical Toxicology operates one of the busiest in-patient medical toxicology services in the country providing care at both the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center and at Phoenix Children's Hospital. The clinical service admits and consults on over 600 patients annually. The scope of pathology is broad with patients presenting with a wide variety of conditions including overdoses, envenomations, occupational exposures, adverse drug reactions, and other toxicologic problems. The program was established in 1983, and is currently staffed by five board-certified medical toxicologists. The program has graduated over 28 fellows, who have gone on to a variety of positions including academic emergency medicine physicians and residency directors, directors or originators of medical toxicology services, toxicology fellowship directors, and poison center directors. The Science of Public Health Protection At TERA, we conduct our work at the intersection of science and health policy. Chemicals are an important part of our daily lives. Some chemicals are essential to a healthy life, but under certain circumstances some chemicals may also present risk to our health. TERA studies the way our bodies interact with the chemicals around us. As an independent non-profit, we strive to support the protection of public health by providing risk managers, legislators, and ordinary citizens with the toxicology information they need to make important decisions about the chemicals in our lives.

Basic studies in the laboratory are the foundation of our understanding of contaminant exposure and effects in the field. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) determines specific contaminant effects; elucidates the mechanisms of toxicity; compares species response to toxic agents; develops biomarkers, instrumentation, or other tools to identify chemicals or effects; and develops experimental designs and methods for appropriate statistical analyses related to contaminant studies. Toxicology research within the USGS Contaminant Biology program focuses on the following issues: Biomarkers, Tools, and Methods

Welcome to SOFT-TOX.org Visit the SOFT 2011 Annual Meeting website. Forensic toxicologists are those scientists engaged in the analysis of biological fluids and tissues for drugs and/or poisons and who interpret the information generated from these analyses in a judicial context. The Society of Forensic Toxicologists, Inc. is an organization composed of practicing forensic toxicologists and those interested in the discipline for the purpose of promoting and developing forensic toxicology. Through its annual meetings, the Society provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas among toxicology professionals in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. SOFT sponsored programs such as workshops, newsletters, proficiency testing and SOFT sponsored technical publications constantly improve the forensic toxicologists' skills and knowledge. The Society fosters friendship and cooperation among toxicologists and advocates a high level of professionalism by sponsoring certification programs for its members. Our Mission The Society of Forensic Toxicologists, Inc. is an organization composed of practicing forensic toxicologists and those interested in the discipline for the purpose of promoting and developing forensic toxicology.

Substance Abuse in the Workplace
The Problem:
Substance abuse is not your problem
How Substance Abuse Affects Your Company:
Drug use not only affects your employees, it affects your bottom line . Nationwide, the associated costs of employee substance abuse are more than $117 billion annually, with an average cost of $7,000 per substance abuser per year. Employees with substance abuse problems:
  • Are 5 times more likely to file a workers' compensation claim Are 3 times more likely to be late for work Use 2.5 times more medical benefits Are one-third less productive
How CRL Can Help:
New Urine Alcohol Test Offering - Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG): CRL is now offering an alcohol metabolite test for the long-term detection of alcohol. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) is a minor metabolite of alcohol ingestion and has the benefit of a longer detection period. Due to the instability of this metabolite in urine, CRL is also monitoring for the presence of ethyl sulfate (EtS) in every sample. EtS has been shown to be stable in urine and is not affected by the presence of bacteria or yeast. In order to provide the very best in safeguards for the donor and our clients, CRL is only offering EtG results in conjunction with EtS.

Introducing ECETOC "The strength of ECETOC is not simply its scientific credibility, which is essential, but also its capacity to address real world issues confronting the industry as a whole or in part"
Martin Kayser, Chairman of the Board of Administration
ECETOC was established in 1978 as a scientific, non-profit making, non-commercial association and currently counts as its members 49 of the leading companies with interests in the manufacture and use of chemicals. An independent organisation, ECETOC provides a scientific forum through which the extensive specialist expertise of manufacturers and users can be harnessed to research, evaluate, assess, and publish reviews on the ecotoxicology and toxicology of chemicals, biomaterials and pharmaceuticals. The Association's main objective is to identify, evaluate, and through such knowledge help the industry to minimise any potentially adverse effects on human health and the environment that may arise from the manufacture and use of chemicals. To achieve this, ECETOC facilitates the networking of suitably qualified scientists from its member companies and co-operates in a scientific context with international agencies, government authorities and professional societies.

Have you ever wondered why prescription drugs have "side effects" along with the effect the drug is supposed to produce? Or why some plants and animals are poisonous? Or how exposure to air pollutants like sulfur and nitrogen oxides might affect people's health? The answers to these and many other questions are found in an area of science called Toxicology. Toxicology is the science that studies the effects of toxicants (in other words, poisons) on living organisms. What Toxicologists Do Toxicologists conduct basic research on the effects of toxicants on human health and the environment, develop and perform tests to assess the safety of drugs and other chemical products, and assist government agencies in developing regulations and standards in areas ranging from food safety to pollution control.
