Ultrasound Technician School
Ultrasound technicians work primarily with ultrasound equipment. The equipment is used in order to observe organs and internal areas of the body that cannot be seen on x-rays. Ultrasound equipment is most commonly used in order to view the unborn child of a pregnant woman. Students can be taught how to use ultrasound machines and other equipment when attending ultrasound schools. As well as being taught how to interact with patients, students are also taught how to maintain the equipment. Ultrasound jobs are available throughout the medical community. There are some ultrasound technicians employed by hospitals, and then there are others that work for heath care facilities whereby they travel to the homes of patients in order to perform their tasks. Technicians are required to work in a variety of different situations and with a variety of people. Being flexible and being able to work in an ever changing environment is vital when becoming a sonographer. Regardless of where a person works, the ultrasound tech should have been taught by the ultrasound diagnostic school on how to cope with every situation in a competent manner. A person needs to have skills and good mechanical skills in order to become an ultrasound technologist. It is important that they enjoy working with complex equipment. Good communication skills are also required along with good people skills. People skills are a huge part of being an ultrasound tech, as is being able to work with complicated medical equipment. Both natural and learned skills are required.

    Definition
Ultrasound involves the use of high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs and systems within the body. Images: Abdominal ultrasound Ultrasound in pregnancy 17 week ultrasound 30 week ultrasound Carotid duplex Ultrasound comparison Thyroid ultrasound Ultrasound Ultrasound, normal fetus- ventricles of brain
    Alternative Names

    How the test is performed
An ultrasound machine creates images that allow various organs in the body to be examined. The machine sends out high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off body structures. A computer receives these reflected waves and uses them to create a picture. Unlike with an x-ray, there is no ionizing radiation exposure with this test. The test is done in the ultrasound or radiology department. You will be lying down for the procedure. A clear, water-based conducting gel is applied to the skin over the area being examined to help with the transmission of the sound waves. A handheld probe called a transducer is then moved over the area being examined. You may be asked to change position so that other areas can be examined. Ultrasound in Wound Healing
Author: Joseph McCulloch, PT, PhD
LSU Medical Center, Director of the Physical Therapy Department
Topics Covered Here: How does ultrasound benefit wound healing? Frequency Considerations in the use of ultrasound Application of ultrasound to wounds ... Application of ultrasound to periwound tissue Ultrasound is a mechanical vibration delivered at a frequency above the range of human hearing. Clinical ultrasound units currently being manufactured typically deliver ultrasound at frequencies of 1 and 3 MHz with duty cycles ranging from 20 to 100 percent. Duty cycles less than 100% are usually termed pulsed ultrasound while a 100% duty cycle is referred to as continuous ultrasound.
How does ultrasound benefit wound healing?
  • Inflammatory Phase - ultrasound causes a degranulation of mast cells resulting in the release of histamine. Histamine and other chemical mediators released from the mast cell are felt to play a role in attracting neutrophils and monocytes to the injured site. These and other events appear to accelerate the acute inflammatory phase and promote healing. Proliferative Phase - ultrasound has been noted to effect fibroblasts and stimulate them to secrete collagen 1. This can accelerate the process of wound contraction and increase tensile strength of the healing tissue 2. Connective tissue will elongate better if both heat and stretch are combined. Continuous ultrasound at higher therapeutic intensities provides and effective means of heating deeper tissue prior to stretch.

Can they tell how big the baby is by ultrasound?
By Robin Elise Weiss, LCCE , About.com Guide

Ultrasound exam Photo (c) A.D.A.M. zSB(3,3) Question: Can they tell how big the baby is by ultrasound? Answer: Ultrasound exams are notoriously inaccurate for predicting the weight of your baby. The ultrasound gives an estimate of the weight of your baby, but this estimate can be off a pound or more in either direction. There are multiple ways to predict the weight via ultrasound, making it not advised for most to make decisions about induction and planned cesarean section based solely on estimated fetal weight. Your midwife or doctor may also try to predict the fetal weight by using their hands during a physical exam of your abdomen. This is also not accurate, though some practitioners are better than others. Many women will have lots of stories about being induced for having suspected large babies, there are even stories about scheduled cesareans. Where the cesareans are done for large babies, but at birth the babies are several pounds under the prebirth estimate. This is why many people do not recommend using this estimate to make decisions about the mode of birth.

Ultrasound is cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing . Although this limit varies from person to person, it is approximately 20 kilohertz (20,000 hertz) in healthy, young adults and thus, 20 kHz serves as a useful lower limit in describing ultrasound. The production of ultrasound is used in many different fields, typically to penetrate a medium and measure the reflection signature of an object in the medium. The reflection signature can reveal details about the inner structure of the medium. The most well-known application of this technique is its use in sonography to produce pictures of a fetus in the human womb. In addition, some animals can hear ultrasound frequencies, and bats and dolphins use ultrasound for echolocation. Approximate frequency ranges corresponding to ultrasound, with rough guide of some applications A fetus in its mother's womb, viewed in a sonogram (brightness scan)

An Ultrasound Technician Can Potentially Earn $83,950
Start Your Way To A New High Paying Career!
Ultrasound diagnostic digital imaging is one of the fastest emerging fields in the healthcare industry. Ultrasound technician schools are turning out well-trained students who are up-to-date with the most current sonography technologies. As a result, there is a very high demand for their unique experience sand skills. Ultrasound therapy is fast becoming the diagnostic method of choice in many areas of medicine, leaving healthcare institutions competing amongst themselves for the most qualified sonographers who are educated at the leading ultrasound technician training schools. Sonogram Technicians use an instrument called a transducer to transmit high frequency sound waves through the body of the patient. As the sound waves bounce off the targeted body part or organ, their echoes are captured by specialized equipment that converts them into visual images. The internal images are then examined by a trained and credentialed diagnostic physician via digital imaging. Ultrasound is perhaps most often associated with pregnancies, but now diagnostic medical sonography is used to scan everything from the nervous system to the digestive system, blood vessels, tumors, the eyes and more. Health care professionals often prefer ultrasound to other diagnostic scanning techniques (such as radiographic technology, or x-rays) due to the safety of this non-invasive technology and its ability to capture such detailed images.

he story of the development of ultrasound applications in medicine should probably start with the history of measuring distance under water using sound waves. The term SONAR refers to Sound Navigation and Ranging . Ultrasound scanners can be regarded as a form of 'medical' Sonar. As early as Jean-Daniel Colladon , a Swiss physicist, had successfully used an underwater bell to determine the speed of sound in the waters of Lake Geneva. In the later part of the 1800s, physicists were working towards defining the fundamental physics of sound vibrations (waves), transmission, propagation and refraction. One of them was Lord Rayleigh in England whose famous treatise " the Theory of Sound " published in first described sound wave as a mathematical equation, forming the basis of future practical work in acoustics. As for high frequency 'ultrasound', Lazzaro Spallanzani , an Italian biologist, could be credited for it's discovery when he demonstrated in the ability of bats navigating accurately in the dark was through echo reflection from high frequency inaudible sound. Very high frequency sound waves above the limit of human hearing were generated by English scientist
