Significant Points
  • Local governments employ about 66 percent of urban and regional planners. Employment is projected to grow 19 percent, which is faster than the average. Most new jobs will be in affluent, rapidly growing communities. Job prospects will be best for those with a master's degree; bachelor's degree holders with additional skills in GIS or mapping may find entry-level positions, but advancement opportunities are limited.
Nature of the Work About this section
Urban and regional planners Planners promote the best use of a community's land and resources for residential, commercial, institutional, and recreational purposes. They address environmental, economic, and social health issues of a community as it grows and changes. They may formulate plans relating to the construction of new school buildings, public housing, or other kinds of infrastructure. Planners also may help to make decisions about developing resources and protecting ecologically sensitive regions. Some planners are involved in environmental issues including pollution control, wetland preservation, forest conservation, and the location of new landfills. Planners also may help to draft legislation on environmental, social, and economic issues, such as planning a new park, sheltering the homeless, or making the region more attractive to businesses.

    Urban and Regional Planning
As our nation and the world become increasingly urban in character, there is a growing interest in urban and regional planning. The main concerns of the planning profession are with the critical issues of urban and regional growth and change, as well as environmental and social balance. Planners strive to encourage orderly growth and development that is responsive to the present and future needs of society. Urban and regional planning career opportunities exist in city, county, regional, state and national government, private consulting firms, non-profit organizations, and research and academic institutions.
Opportunities for Planning Education at San José State University
Located in the southern portion of the San Francisco Bay Region, SJSU lies in the heart of Silicon Valley - one of the most rapidly changing and socially complex metropolitan areas of the nation. The San José metropolitan area and the larger Bay Region offer outstanding opportunities for case studies and research in all aspects of urban and regional planning. The department engages faculty and students in public service projects designed to assist local communities in addressing topical planning issues, while complementing the academic curriculum with real-world professional experiences.

    Overview
Return to Top The department's primary degree is the master of science (M.S.) in urban and regional planning (URPL). This program normally requires two academic years of full-time work plus a summer internship. In addition to the M.S. program, the department offers a variety of special master's degree programs, as well as a Ph.D. program. Some double-degree master's programs are offered, and provisions have been made, in all of the department's basic programs, to serve the specific needs of students from developing countries. The M.S. program equips students with sufficient understanding of and training in the principal tools, methods, and techniques of planning to enable them to perform effectively as junior members of planning staffs from the start of their careers; in addition, UW-Madison's program in planning emphasizes concepts, perspectives, and practices that promise to be useful not only upon graduation, but even more so in later years for graduates who reach positions of major influence and responsibility.
