    Joseph Leidy (1823-1891):
    Encyclopedist of the Natural World
When Joseph Leidy started his career in 1845, scientific research was dominated by gentlemen amateurs and wealthy collectors. By the end of his life, science in the United States had become increasingly professionalized and specialized. Leidy straddled these two worlds. He was an acclaimed researcher, but his income came primarily from teaching and an assortment of administrative duties. Unlike the specialized scientists of the late 19th Century, however, he had expertise in and made significant contributions to a wide range of subjects. To borrow the apt subtitle of Leonard Warren's recent biography , Leidy was "the last man who knew everything." Known as the " Father of American Vertebrate Paleontology ", Leidy described the first relatively complete dinosaur skeleton, Hadrosaurus , and introduced many American and European scientists to the fossil riches of the American West. Leidy's consummate skill in comparative anatomy would allow him to identify and characterize even the most fragmentary fossil material.

Vertebrate Paleontology
Vertebrate paleontology in the United States originated in Philadelphia through the efforts of physicians and natural historians associated with the American Philosophical Society and The Academy of Natural Sciences. Native Philadelphian, Dr. Joseph Leidy (1823-1891) was a particularly brilliant anatomist working at the Academy during the growth of paleontology as a scientific discipline. Many call Leidy the father of vertebrate paleontology in this country. Edward Drinker Cope, another Philadelphian, made tremendous contributions to vertebrate paleontology from his home base at the Academy. After a hiatus of almost a century, research in vertebrate paleontology is active again at the Academy of Natural Sciences ( see below The historical core of the Academy's collection includes the Thomas Jefferson Fossil Collection, the first dinosaur fossils from North America, the only fossil collected by Lewis and Clark, as well as the extensive collections of Leidy and some of the Cope collections. Although many of these specimens have great historical value, they also remain crucial for primary research. Today, the vertebrate fossil collection houses more than 22,000 specimens and that number is rapidly growing through recent research efforts. Recent and ongoing collections projects have included renovation of the fossil preparation lab and some of the collection space as well as upgrading the conservation of all specimens.

The Transantarctic Vertebrate Paleontology Project involves the collection and study of Triassic to Jurassic age vertebrates from the southern Transantarctic Mountains near the Beardmore and Shackleton Glaciers, Antarctica. William R. Hammer of Augustana College, currently the Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation grant supporting this research, has led seven vertebrate collecting expeditions to these regions since 1977. To date faunas of four different ages have been studied. Included among the taxa discovered are synapsids, prolacertids, procolophonids, a rauisuchid and a variety of temnospondyl amphibians from the Early Triassic, synapsids and large capitosaurid temnospondyls from the early Middle Triassic, a few indeterminant bone fragments and a dicynodont tusk from the Late Traissic. The theropod Cryolophosaurus ellioti , along with the basal sauropodomorph, Glacialisaurus hammeri , ?sauropod, tritylodont, and pterosaur taxa are known from the Early Jurassic. It also tries to connect, on the evolutionary timeline, the animals of the past and their modern day relatives.
The fossil record clearly shows the evolutionary progression from early aquatic vertebrates to mammals. The earliest known fossil vertebrates were heavily armored fish discovered in rocks from the Ordovician Period about 500 to 430 million years ago. (The phrase 'million years ago' is shortened to 'mya' in most paleontological references). The Devonian Period (395 to 345 mya) brought in the changes that allowed primitive air-breathing fish to remain on land as long as they wished, thus becoming the first terrestrial vertebrates, the amphibians

Representative fossils include articulated skeletons, isolated bones, eggs, and traces such as trackways and coprolites. VMNH houses rich collections of Triassic vertebrate fossils, including dinosaur tracks. We also have hundreds of dinosaur bones from the famous Morrison Formation of Wyoming and excellent material of Miocene whales from Virginia. Ice Age vertebrate remains from Saltville, southwest Virginia, are also well-represented in the collections. Paleobotany collections might include megafossils such as leaves, wood, and reproductive structures including cones, seeds, and flowers, together with microfossils like pollen and spores. The VMNH collections are largely restricted to megafossils from the Triassic of eastern North America and remains from the Coalfields of Virginia, West Virginia and Illinois. DR. In 2003, our field teams Poposaurus. Poposaurus is a little known carnivore that, while it resembles a small theropod dinosaur, is actually more closely related to crocodilians. For the past year we have been carefully removing the rock (the matrix) that has entombed this important skeleton for over 240 million years.
Assistant Preparator Vicki Fitzgerald and Curator Jacques Gauthier open one of the 6 field jackets of the Poposaurus collected in 2003. Large specimens were encased in plaster and burlap to protect them during their long trip from Utah back to New Haven. In the Lab the jackets are carefully opened to reveal the specimen inside.
Vicki carefully cleans and glues together all the tiny fragments of bone that had weathered out from our Poposaurus fossils (fossils can only be found when they weather out of rock). Paleontologists walk every hill and gully looking for tiny bits of bone that indicate that there could be a whole skeleton just underneath the surface.

Added to the displays in the following year was a nearly complete skeleton of an American mastodon, which turned out to be very popular, attracting some 500,000 visitors each year to the museum in its early years. Diplodocus , one of which was designated as the type specimen of Diplodocus carnegii by Hatcher in 1901. Carnegie Museum of Natural History's quest for dinosaurs quickly moved to Colorado, where a new curator, John Bell Hatcher, joined by Charles W. Gilmore in 1901 and William H. Utterback in 1902, were soon shipping carloads of fossils back to Pittsburgh. Earl Douglass joined the Carnegie paleontologists in 1902. His field work took him to northeastern Utah, where he discovered the spectacular assemblages of dinosaur bones in the Morrison Formation that are now Dinosaur National Monument. Dinosaurs Diplodocus carnegii and Tyrannosaurus rex Diplodocus carnegii was not only the best (almost complete) dinosaur skeleton known in the 1900s, but also the largest land animal known at that time.
