Welcome to Vertebrate Zoology
  • What was that bird I saw during my morning beach walk? What is the best way to avoid being bitten by a snake? Which local animals are endangered?
The Department of Vertebrate Zoology is your local resource for helping you learn about and enjoy the environment around us. The Museum originally was founded as The Museum of Comparative Oology in 1916 and these same collections are housed within the Vertebrate Zoology Department. Historic collections contain specimens from as early as 1849 and have grown to a regional collection of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and eggs, and mammals containing over 40,000 specimens! The Department is always active preparing, cataloging and archiving specimens within our collections, while overseeing the animals in the exhibits. As a public resource, we value our role in answering public queries and helping scientists, students, and the private sector utilize our collections for research. The staff scientists conduct both contracted and personal research. For collection queries or further information regarding the Vertebrate Zoology Department, click on an email address below or phone us at (805) 682-4711.

Monkeying Around Wins Young Naturalist Award for California Student
Wednesday, September 08
2010 Young Naturalist Award winner Athman studied friendship bonds between adult male macaques. Photo courtesy of Athman Can male monkeys develop friendships? That was the question Athman, an eighth grader from San Jose, California, asked as he observed bonnet macaques during his family’s annual visit to southern India. Over the years, Athman had followed, played with, observed, and fed his monkey friends while learning more and more about their social behavior and interactions. Now he wondered if males in the group had developed friendships with other males and how strong these bonds might be. His thorough research and unique topic earned him one of this year’s 13 Young Naturalist Awards. Before beginning his investigation, Athman read the latest research relating to friendship among primates. Then he chose seven male macaques for his study. First, he observed them to determine a dominance hierarchy among the individuals, then focused on each macaque to study his behavior. An analysis of his data showed that male bonnet macaques do enjoy varying strengths of social bonds of varying strengths with others in the group. Athman’s essay

Mr. Arthur Clark The vertebrate collections include the Dr. R. C. Bothner Collection (over 950 jars of reptiles and amphibians) from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY, and the Dr. J. J. Reedy Collection (over 700 study skins, fluid-preserved specimens and skeletons) from Niagara University. The fish collection includes the Dr. W. F. Hadley Collection, a large (approx. 1100 jars) collection of fish from the State University of New York at Buffalo and smaller collections of voucher specimens from the Corps of Engineers. Birds comprise the largest collection in the division. Bird collections acquired over the years include specimens from the estate of K. B. Mathes, the commercial collectors F. B. Webster and F. E. Johnson, the E. Michael Purchase, the G. F. Guelf Collection purchase, the C. K. Worthen Collection, and specimens from H. L. Stoddard, Sr. Noteworthy scientific collections include 70 study skins collected in Veracruz, Mexico by Dr. R. F. Andrle and 71 study skins collected in Guyana by R. S. Singh et al.. The Museum sponsored Spaulding-Barrett African Expeditions to Kenya in 1967 and Mozambique in 1969 brought back 322 birds from Kenya and 43 birds from Mozambique (lists published in a Museum bulletin). Bird specimens from the collections along with field observations are the basis for Birds of the Niagara Frontier Region, the definitive regional work published in 1965.

Herpetology
History of the Collections
Some of the earliest herpetology material in the Division of Vertebrate Zoology Addison E. Verrill on the island of Dominica in the late 1890s. Specimens were added sporadically during the early 20th century as a corollary of museum-based collecting trips. Marshall B. Bishop made significant collections of herpetological material in Florida during the 1930s, and Yale Peabody Museum expeditions (such as the Morden African Expedition ) continued to add to the collection.
The herpetology collection includes the specimens used by Stanley C. Ball in his extensive monograph (1936) on the natural history of the spadefoot toad in Connecticut. Willard D. Hartman brought back an important cecillian collection from the Seychelles in 1958, along with material from India and Papua New Guinea.
The herpetology collections also grew at this time through the collecting efforts of Charles Reed (mammalogy), who amassed large series of Egyptian material, and Raymond Paynter and Philip Humphrey (ornithology), who brought back material from Pakistan and Haiti, respectively. Between 1968 and 1970 Charlie Miller contributed significant series of Cameroon specimens to the collection.
