The Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology (ISCA) and the Pitt Rivers Museum (PRM) have been involved in teaching Visual Anthropology at Oxford for over ten years. Staff and students are actively engaged in visual research across a broad field of themes and geographical areas: from early documentary cinema in India, to contemporary vernacular photography in Japan.
Building upon this experience and expertise, since 2002 ISCA has offered a one year taught course M.Sc. degree in Visual Anthropology, to complement existing degrees in Material Anthropology, Social Anthropology and Medical Anthropology. On successful completion of the M.Sc. candidates are eligible to seek readmission as doctoral candidates.
This one-year MSc degree provides students with a thorough training in the theories and methods of visual anthropological research, in preparation for planned doctoral research or to gain employment in areas such as museum and visual archive work, or media research. The M.Sc. is recognised by the ESRC. UK and EU applicants may be eligible to be nominated for ‘1+3' award to fund the M.Sc. and a subsequent doctorate. Please contact the ISCA Admissions Secretary for details.

Department of Anthropology
Best known for its pioneering role in visual anthropology, USC's Anthropology Department has strong research programs in all four fields of the discipline (i.e., Archaeology, Socio-cultural Anthropology, Linguistics, and Physical Anthropology). The Department offers a B.A. in Anthropology with concentrations in visual anthropology and urban applied anthropology; a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Archaeology ; minor programs in cultural anthropology, medical anthropology, folklore and popular culture, Southeast Asia and its people, and a progressive 5th year M.A. in visual anthropology. At the graduate level, the Department currently offers both an M.A. in Visual Anthropology and a Certificate in Visual Anthropology. Students interested in a doctorate degree in Physical Anthropology apply through the Department of Biology's Integrative Evolutionary Biology program Anthropology brings a global comparative perspective to the study of human beings, across both time and space. At USC the study of anthropology is linked through its subdisciplines (i.e., medical anthropology, visual anthropology, legal and political anthropology, primatology, etc.) to many other fields in the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The USC Department of Anthropology requires students to become involved in ethnographic research and fieldwork while offering them a firm theoretical foundation in anthropology. Special departmental areas of emphasis at both the undergraduate and graduate levels are provided by programs in visual anthropology and primatology. Undergraduates may take a number of courses in visual anthropology that focus on the analysis and understanding of human behavior and are encouraged to include visual media in their senior field methods practicum. Visual anthropology anthropology, classification and analysis of humans and their society, descriptively, culturally, historically, and physically. Its unique contribution to studying the bonds of human social relations has been the distinctive concept of culture. , for all of its Robert Flahertys' and Edward Curtis' of the past, is a relatively new and open area of the social sciences exhibiting all of the adolescent insecurities (and possibilities) inherent in the growing process. The recent Anthropological and Documentary Film Conference held at Temple University in Philadelphia said as much about the nature and structure of conferences as it did about the subject of visual anthropology. It was, however, an important arena for bringing some important questions into the open The fact that few answers were given was of little importance; the time and setting called more for whys than hows.
A split developed first and most obviously over the old question of visual versus verbal anthropology: can pictures as well as words serve as objective data? One anthropologist suggested that the only way film could be useful as an objective tool would be to turn the camera on and let it run twenty-four hours a day. While this was admittedly one of the more extreme suggestions, it reflected a still-held distrust, not especially of the camera, but of its operator. A constant criticism of the films shown and especially of Robert Gardner's Dead Birds (which ironically was not shown but generated more discussion than any film presented), was that they told more, or at least as much, about the filmmaker as the culture being studied. It is precisely and

VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY
I was doing photography "professionally" at age 14 with a home darkroom and my trusty Yashica "D." At 17 I opened our second photographic studio with a partner. By age twenty I was running the business on my own and was still in love with photography. It was clear by then though that I couldn't realize my ambition to go to university while running a business so I decided to close the studio and study full-time. My interest in photography merged with a fascination for visual anthropology and I was delighted to discover, when I joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton that I would get to teach visual anthropology (54.317) once in a while. I'll be offering this course in 1997-98 (Professor Bruce Cox often offers this course too). This page is very much under construction but here are a few links to get on with. Our Visual Anthropology Course This is the 54.317 course taught by either Professor Bruce Cox or myself in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Carleton University.

Abstract
We discuss some of the ways that visual materials have been used in anthropology and how digital technology affect our approaches in some ways more than others. Rather than using hypertext and multimedia as analytic endpoints we introduce an approach which hypertext facilitates, conceived as a hierarchical set of layers at differing levels of abstraction with the analytic article or book at one end, furthest from the field experiences on which it is based.
Keywords: Visual Anthropology, Computer Applications.
Subject Area Visual Anthropology

VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY CERTIFICATE The University of South Carolina announces a Graduate Certificate in Visual Anthropology for graduate students enrolled in M.A. or Ph.D. programs in Media Arts and Anthropology but which also serves graduate students in such areas as Education, the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, as well as Sociology and Geography. The Certificate introduces these graduate students to the intellectual understanding (anthropology and visual theories) and the hands-on practical skills (shooting and editing) necessary to make anthropologically-informed ethnographic (documentary) films or videos, and/or to effectively incorporate visuals (stills/film/video) into their research. The director of the Program is in Anthropology, and works with the relevant faculty in Anthropology and Media Arts. Students completing this Certificate will have a skill that complements but does not replace the fieldwork/research methods requirements already in place for the various graduate programs. Visual Anthropology is a very broad category including both ethnographic (documentary) film and various research uses of visuals (mainly these days video and still photography). The wide interest in Visual Anthropology is evidenced by several long-standing scholarly organizations: the Society for Visual Anthropology (a Section of the American Anthropological Association), the International Commission for Visual Anthropology, and the closely-related International Visual Sociology Association, all of which publish journals.

Jay Ruby and Richard Chalfen challenge the idea that film is art and science is an objective chronicler of reality in an article that discusses the difficulties experienced in the development of a truly anthropological cinema.

THE SOCIETY FOR THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION NEWSLETTER VOL 5 NO 3, SPRING 1974:5-7 THE TEACHING OF VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY AT TEMPLE Jay Ruby and Richard Chalfen (A paper originally presented at the 1973 American Anthropological Association Meetings, New Orleans) The teaching of visual anthropology at Temple University has two larger contexts which, to some degree, define and give a specific focus to the training. The first is a departmental philosophy of graduate education and the second is the fact that this training occurs within a program of graduate studies in culture and communication. (Other graduate program emphases include urban anthropology and biocultural adaptation.) Graduate education in anthropology at Temple is based on the traditional assumption that anthropologists should have a foundation in all areas of their discipline. Students are required to pass comprehensive examinations in linguistics, archaeology, and cultural and physical anthropology. Only after successful completion of these exams are students encouraged to specialize. Students with an interest in visual communication pursue their specialty within the broader context of the culture and communication program. The program is designed to train students of anthropology who wish to study various modes of communication in a cultural context. The basic assumption underlying the program is that all communicative, interactive, and expressive forms of behavior are legitimate subjects of anthropological inquiry.
