UNL Onsite Training continuing education opportunities for professionals.
We currently are developing late fall training for onsite professionals, with a focus on Operation and Maintenance. Plans are for sessions to be held in November in Sidney, North Platte, and Grand Island. In early December training will be offered at the ARDC near Mead, and Norfolk. Brochures will be mailed around September 20th, and a pdf of the brochure with registration information is available here.
As a result of Extension programming, Nebraskans benefit from improved water quality and a cleaner environment.
Extension at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is actively involved in programming that helps homeowners, industry, and youth audiences understand onsite wastewater treatment systems for handling domestic sewage.

Wastewater
Wastewater is the biggest waste by volume in New Zealand. Approximately 1.5 billion litres of domestic wastewater is discharged into the environment daily. Sewage treatment practices have changed significantly in recent years. Changes include the reuse of sewage sludge and effluent on land, and the emergence of new technologies for the treatment of sewage. The New Zealand Waste Strategy includes a target requiring all substandard wastewater treatment plants to be upgraded, closed or replaced by December 2020. The Ministry for the Environment partners with Water New Zealand to develop initiatives which improve the country's environmental performance in the area of wastewater. A number of joint initiatives exist to manage wastewater, including:
  • Implementation of the Liquid and Hazardous Waste Code of Practice with Water New Zealand . The Code was designed to protect human health and the environment, and related to liquid waste and hazardous waste that is transported.

    Wastewater
Schedule a Plant Tour now! City of Tulsa's Wastewater System - Watch the video now Every day, Tulsans use millions of gallons of water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, manufacturing, irrigating lawns and crops, and recreation or other uses. The dirty water left behind by these activities is called wastewater and most of it is transported to treatment plants where it is cleaned before it is discharged into the Arkansas or Verdigris rivers. (Runoff from outdoor uses flows into storm drains and is carried directly to creeks and rivers without being treated.) Keeping Tulsa's water clean is a team effort that involves citizens and City workers. Federal and state regulations as well as City ordinances guide Public Works employees who operate and maintain the treatment plants, sanitary sewers, and other wastewater facilities. Residents and business people can do their part by disposing of hazardous waste properly, and funding the infrastructure needed by a growing city. Currently, Tulsa can treat 103 million gallons per day of wastewater. There are 1,960 miles of underground trunk and collection system sewer lines in Tulsa, and 62 life stations that move the water to four major treatment plants, Northside, Southside, Haikey Creek and Lower Bird creek.

Discusses and illustrates the organisms in sludge, and what can be learned by microscopic analysis of biological treatment systems for wastewater.
http://www.engitech.com/asm.htm
Activated Sludge Microorganisms
Routine microscopic analysis of biological treatment systems provides information that is unavailable through other means. The microscope reveals that bubbling tankful of dark liquid is an amazing habitat teaming with life. By examining the tiniest creatures that inhabit every drop, much can be learned about the treatment environment. You may be unimpressed by the shear numbers of protozoa and metazoa organisms present, typically 4-40 million per gallon. But, the complexity of the single-celled Euplotes patella, with its specialized feeding and locomotion bristles, water cavities, gullet, food pockets, and dual nuclei, will surely grab your interest. There are many who have a great desire to learn about microorganisms and their roles. This web site is Engitech's attempt to share the wealth of current information, get your feedback, and gather more information. Please comment or question at will. The following pages are about microorganisms. What they look like, their names, their food, what their presence means, and the water quality they indicate. Updates will appear periodically. The graphics help illustrate each organism's unique role. The food pyramid graphic depicts a microorganism's position in the food chain. Because energy is lost moving up the food chain, only a few predators are present compared to numerous bacterial feeders. The web, extending into the pyramid shows the microorganism's usual food. Predators typically eat from a narrow set of prey, while omnivores and scavengers eat from a broader food selection. Guess who gets left when food gets scarce. Right, the picky predators disappear first, while scavengers and omnivores survive.
