Aerated Lagoons - Wastewater Treatment
astewater lagoons have been used as a process for wastewater treatment for centuries. In the 1920's artificial ponds were designed and constructed to receive and stabilize wastewater . By 1950, the use of ponds had become recognized as an economical wastewater treatment method for small municipalities and industries. As of 1980 approximately 7,000 waste stabilization lagoons were in use in the U.S. Today, one third of all secondary wastewater treatment facilities include a pond system of one type or another. Of these, just over 90% are for flows 1 MGD or less. But ponds can be used for larger cities for wastewater treatment as well. Some of the largest pond systems in this country are in Northern California, serving such cities as Sunnyvale (pop. 105,000), Modesto (pop. 150,000), Napa (pop. 175,000), and Stockton (pop. 275,000).

Wastewater treatment
Wastewater treatment uses microbes to decompose organic matter in sewage. If too much untreated sewage or other organic matter is added to a lake or stream, dissolved oxygen levels will drop too low to support sensitive species of fish and other aquatic life. Wastewater treatment systems are designed to digest much of the organic matter before the wastewater is released so that this will not occur. Treatment systems use physical, chemical, and biological processes:
  • Primary treatment physically removes large solids using grates, screens, and settling tanks. Secondary treatment promotes growth of bacteria and other microbes that break down the organic wastes. These biodegradation processes also take place in streams, lakes, and oceans, but the purification systems in nature can easily be overloaded with input of too much organic waste. Secondary treatment prevents this type of pollution by degrading most of the organic matter before the water is released into the environment. Tertiary treatment is used only where it is needed to protect the receiving waters from excess nutrients. In tertiary treatment, the concentrations of phosphorus or nitrogen are reduced through biological or chemical processes.

Wastewater
A key role of EPA is to improve the quality of water environments and prevent water pollution. Although major improvements in the control of wastewater have already taken place, there are still cases where the impacts of discharges need to be minimised.
Wastewater includes sewage and industrial waste. EPA's program to control wastes is based on the following hierarchy (order of preference): The best way to manage wastes is to stop them being generated, while treatment and disposal is the least preferred approach. This order applies to all types of waste, including wastewater. EPA believes the above hierarchy is a key to moving towards a sustainable society.
Guidelines for risk assessment of wastewater discharges to waterways
The impact of wastewater discharges to inland and marine water bodies is attracting greater interest, particularly given predictions for a drier climate in the future. Impacts are often exacerbated by drought conditions, with low flows reducing the dilution of discharges.

Ames WPC Receives the NACWA's Platinum-20 Peak Performance Award again in 2010! WHAT WE DO From your toilets and sinks to the sewers and streams we ensure Ames has quality water. The water you drink goes through many processes before it lands in your cup. The process starts by collecting water from Squaw and Skunk River Valley shallow groundwater aquifers (or underground layers of water) and treating the water, making it potable (drinkable). Once treated the water is distributed throughout the city into homes and businesses. The cycle is then completed when water from your showers, sinks and toilets enters the sewer system travels to the wastewater facility where it is treated before returning to the lakes and streams, creating a healthy environment.

MODELING AND CONTROL OF WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANTS
Objectives
Increasing demands on effluent quality and increasing loads in combination with shortage of land area call for an improved control and optimization of wastewater treatment plants. Applied research in automatic control is one important tool in achieving an overall high plant performance. An improved control and optimization of wastewater treatment plants lead to an increased pollutant removal, a reduced need for chemicals and energy savings. We are developing control and estimation strategies for wastewater treatment plants. In particular, the activated sludge process is studied. A key goal is to develop and evaluate control strategies which can be of practical use in improving the performance of the plants. In several projects we develop methods for reducing the energy consumption without reducing the effluent quality (sometimes the effluent quality even improves!). The following researchers in our group perform research in applying methods from automatic control to wastewater treatment technologies:
