There are many specific causes of water pollution, but before we list the toppers, it's important to understand two broad categories of water pollution:
An example of a point source of water pollution is a pipe from an industrial facility discharging effluent directly into a river. An example of a nonpoint-source of water pollution is when fertilizer from a farm field is carried into a stream by rain (i.e. run-off). Point-source pollution is usually monitored and regulated, at least in Western countries, though political factors may complicate how successful efforts are at true pollution control. Nonpoint sources are much more difficult to monitor and control, and today they account for the majority of contaminants in streams and lakes.

Noise is technically one of the most complex and least understood
forms of pollution
Although by listening we detect noise with a great sensitivity, we have often difficulties to describe it and we certainly cannot define it in technical terms - we usually know when noise is excessive, but we cannot predict the required noise reduction and, more important, we cannot determine how to effectively reduce the excessive noise. The proper noise pollution assessment and design of effective noise control measures require: a. thorough understanding of acoustics;

  • About Water Pollution Water pollution accounts for 14,000 deaths everyday, worldwide. An estimated 14 billion pounds of sewage, sludge and garbage are dumped into the world's oceans on a yearly basis. The process of removing pollutants is far from foolproof. Countries which are developed and have water purification systems in place are still affected by... What Kind of Chemical Pollutants Pollute Water? Water pollution comes from many forms: erosion sediment, effluent or bacteriological contaminants, trash and chemicals. Out of the four, chemicals can have the worst effects and the biggest impact. The water system has the ability to handle reasonable quantities of sediment and effluent, and trash can be filtered out. Chemical... Can Soil Pollution Affect Water Pollution? Soil pollution not only affects the land we live upon, but also the water we drink. Water pollution is greatly affected by the soil pollutants from non-point sources, or sources that release pollutants indirectly into the environment. How to Control Water Pollution There are solid and definable techniques in existence that can help to control water pollution, but in order for them to work, we must be aware of what they are, why they are important and how to properly enact them.

Water Pollution
    Water pollution is a term that describes any adverse effect upon water bodies (lakes, rivers, the sea, groundwater etc.) caused by man and his activities. Although natural phenomena such as volcanoes, storms, earthquakes etc. also cause major changes in water chemistry and the ecological status of water, these are not deemed to be pollution. Water pollution has many causes and characteristics. Humans and other farmed organisms produce bodily wastes which enter rivers lakes oceans and other surface waters . These wastes increase the solids suspended in the water (turbidity), they can increase the concentration of bacteria and viruses leading to potential health impacts. Increases in nutrient loading may lead to eutrophication ). Organic wastes such as sewage and farm waste impose high oxygen demands on the receiving water leading to oxygen depletion with potentially severe impacts on the whole eco-system. Industries discharge a variety of pollutants in their wastewater including heavy metals , organic toxins, oils, nutrients, and solids. Discharges can also have thermal effects, especially those form power stations, and these too reduce the available oxygen.

Ames WPC Receives the NACWA's Platinum-20 Peak Performance Award again in 2010! WHAT WE DO From your toilets and sinks to the sewers and streams we ensure Ames has quality water. The water you drink goes through many processes before it lands in your cup. The process starts by collecting water from Squaw and Skunk River Valley shallow groundwater aquifers (or underground layers of water) and treating the water, making it potable (drinkable). Once treated the water is distributed throughout the city into homes and businesses. The cycle is then completed when water from your showers, sinks and toilets enters the sewer system travels to the wastewater facility where it is treated before returning to the lakes and streams, creating a healthy environment.

It involves the following mechanisms:
  • Evaporation: changing of water from liquid to gas
