No Frames Version Welcome to the West Eugene Wetlands Case Web Site. This site offers a wide range of documents related to a real-life case of successful conflict resolution involving wetlands discovered in west Eugene, Oregon. At Rice University, a team of faculty and graduate students involved in the West Eugene Wetlands Web Site Project have collected and linked these resources to make them available to people who should use this web site . You can become involved in the site's simulation opportunities or you can select resources from lists of documents, maps, reports, and images. A brief history of the West Eugene Wetlands will explain why wetlands issues became important in Eugene, Oregon. Feel free to browse an extensive database documents Multimedia

The Lowdown on Wetlands Wetlands are found along rivers, lakes and in depressions. In fact, wetlands are associated with most lowland areas. Water in wetlands moves very slowly. Some wetlands are temporary and seasonal. They occur for a few weeks at a time and then disappear until they are refilled with water. Other wetlands are always under water. Soaking It Up Wetlands are an important part of the environment. They help control flooding by soaking up water during storms. Wetlands also act as natural filters for water pollutants and they trap sediment that can clog rivers, streams and lakes. In fact, wetlands are often compared to kidneys because of their ability to clean up the water supply!
Rest Stop Wetlands are often used as resting places for migrating birds. Other animals, like fish and crabs, lay their eggs in wetlands. Young fish and crabs spend their early life in wetlands, where there is lots of cover from predators. When they grow older, they will move out to more open waters. Disappearing Wetlands About half of the wetlands that were in the United States two centuries ago are now gone. Most were drained and used for farmland or filled in so roads and towns could be built on them. This development has put a strain on species that depend on wetlands for survival. It is estimated that close to 35 percent of the animals and plants on the U.S. endangered or threatened species list depend on wetlands for at least part of their life cycle.

63. Welcome To The Centre For Wetlands, Environment And Natural Resources
Conducts research and offers support in maintaining sustainable wetlands in developing countries. Includes issues related to the reduction and loss of wetland areas.
http://wetlands.hud.ac.uk/
Welcome to the Centre for Wetlands, Environment and Livelihoods. The Centre undertakes research, training and consultancies in support of the sustainable management of wetlands and other environmental resources. Through this work the Centre assists governments, NGOs and rural communities in improving people's livelihoods. The Centre’s work is undertaken in collaboration with universities and NGOs based in the European Union and in developing countries. The Centre also collaborates with international agencies concerned with wetland and forest issues and with international conventions on desertification and wetlands. Funding is obtained from the European Commission, several bilateral and multi-lateral donors, as well as charitable institutions. One of the main foci for the Centre’s work is the search for the sustainable management of wetlands. In many parts of the world, wetlands are increasingly being developed by local communities and are becoming subject to degradation and desertification. This is particularly serious in eastern and southern Africa where wetlands have become the new agricultural frontier. Along with climate variability and deforestation, wetland destruction is having a major impact on the hydrological regime of the region’s rivers. The Centre provides research and training which can help achieve sustainable wetland use and thereby maintain environmental functioning and meet community needs.

They are shallow and allow the growth of rooted or anchored plants such as water lilies but also free floating plants like duckweed Wetlands represent the meeting of two habitats (land and water) and are therefore some of the most biodiverse areas in the world (some say more than rainforests ) with many land and water species, and some that are unique only to the wetlands. Currently, wetlands exist on all the world's continents except Antarctica, but because of increasing pollution and a reduction in open land, they are all threatened. Examples include the

    Wetlands
Wetlands can be described as the transitional zones between uplands and deep water they are areas that are dependent on the presence of water for all or part of the time. Because of this, wetlands that do not have water in them year-round can sometimes be difficult to recognize. However, their presence in the landscape is still significant, as they will fill with water during a flood or storm event and perform important wetland functions, such as sediment stabilization, flood attenuation, and nutrient cycling, along with many others. In the past, wetlands have been viewed as nuisance areas, and until relatively recently, the United States federal government has supported policies that encouraged the draining of wetlands, usually for conversion to cropland. Now wetlands are recognized for their value to human health and economics and are protected ecosystems regulated by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) , as outlined in Section 404 of the Clean Water Act It may come as a surprise to learn that Texas, often thought of as a relatively dry state, contains millions of acres of wetlands of varying types. These wetlands perform a wide array of functions that are invaluable to wildlife and humankind, and with wise use and conservation, we can insure Texas wetlands will still exist for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

    Wisconsin Wetlands
From the sedge meadows of southern Wisconsin to the spruce bogs in the north, wetlands cover a wide array of landscapes. They share in common the ability to support aquatic or "water loving" plants, and provide habitat for more species of plants and animals than any other type of landscape in Wisconsin. Habitat is not their only functional value . Wetlands can also store water to prevent flooding, purify water, protect lake and stream shores from eroding and provide recreational opportunities for wildlife watchers, anglers, hunters, and boaters.
    Protect, Restore and Explore Wetlands
But Wisconsin only has about half of the 10 million acres that were present in 1848 due to farm drainage and filling for development and roads. Laws have slowed their loss, but wetlands continue to be destroyed and degraded. Invasive plants , like purple loosestrife and reed canary grass, are crowding out native plants and harming habitat. Overuse of groundwater and increasing stormwater from development starves or drowns wetlands plants.

News 4 April 2002 - Well the model wetland plans have fallen through because of the cost. However, we have decided to do a field study in the 4th quarter. We have finalized our sites and we have information posted about each of them. Check back in the coming days for more information on each site including topographical maps of each study area. To see our plans click here. The Proposal For our year long research project, we will develop an investigation into wetlands. One of the main topics we will focus on among many others is the idea of using wetlands to treat wastewater. The first quarter section of the project will be mainly background research and setup of this website. The following quarters will include experimentation on the properties of individual plants in a wetland, the construction of a small treatment wetland, and a possible feasability study of the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment of a whole community.
