Zoology is the integrative study of animal biology
Research and teaching in the MSU Zoology Department explores a wide range of biological questions in a diverse array of species, using cutting edge techniques in both the field and the laboratory. We are unified by an emphasis on integration across levels of biological organization, and by our recognition of the explanatory power of evolutionary theory in understanding biological complexity. This integrative perspective helps unify researchers in modern biological subdisciplines, including cellular and developmental biology, neurobiology, animal behavior, ecology, evolution, and environmental science. Admission to Degree Program
All degree programs in the Department of Zoology are limited enrollment programs. Special limitations apply for teaching majors.
    The Discipline
Zoology requires broad training in biological and physical sciences and mathematics. Each degree program is designed to provide this broad background as well as more specific training in a particular discipline. Students are expected to master the subject material and to develop skills in scientific reasoning that will allow them to make intelligent, informed decisions on biological issues.
    Career Opportunities
Students who major in zoology and demonstrate academic competence find numerous employment options, ranging from technical work in research laboratories to field technicians for environmental research companies. Majors may develop expertise and interest in such diverse areas as environmental biology, evolutionary biology, freshwater biology, human biology, marine biology, molecular biology, pest control, taxonomy, and wildlife management.
Students who complete the zoology core course requirements and take the recommended chemistry, mathematics, and physics courses satisfy the requirements for medical and dental schools, as well as for graduate studies in almost all areas of biological teaching and research. Those planning to teach biology and general science in secondary school or biology in junior college may also certify with a major in this department.

Introduction from Paul F. James, Ph.D. Professor and Director of Graduate Studies There are two program tracks in the department leading to a Master's or Ph.D. degree. 1. Students interested in a research-based M.S. degree apply for our Master's Program. Applicants for the Master's Program must have completed or anticipate completion of a B.A. or B.S. degree, or equivalent. After earning a Master's degree, students may choose to continue working toward a Ph.D. degree. 2. Students interested in earning a Ph.D. degree apply to our Doctoral Program. Entry into our Doctoral Program requires prior completion of a Master's degree or 30 semester hours of graduate work with at least a 3.0 average. Students who do not have a prior Master's degree or graduate coursework may still apply since this requirement can be fulfilled during the first 1-2 years of the Doctoral Program. Note that there are also programs in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology (

ZOOLOGY (from Gr.?"wov, a living thing, and Xo yos, theory), that portion of biology which relates to animals, as distinguished from that portion (Botany) which is concerned with plants. History There is something almost pathetic in the childish wonder and delight with which mankind in its earlier phases of civilization gathered up and treasured stories of strange animals from distant lands or deep seas, such as are recorded in the Physiologus in Albertus Magnus , and even at the present day in the popular treatises of Japan and China . That omnivorous universally credulous stage, which may be called the " legendary," was succeeded by the age of collectors and travellers, when many of the strange stories believed in were actually demonstrated as true by the living or preserved trophies brought to Europe . The possibility of in the verification established verification as a habit; and the -collecting of things, instead of the accumulating of reports, developed a new faculty of minute observation. The early collectors of natural curiosities were the founders of zoological science, and to this day the naturalisttraveller and his correlative, the museum curator and systematist, play a most important part in the progress of zoology. Indeed, the historical and present importance of this aspect or branch of zoological science is so great that the name " zoology " has until recently been associated entirely with it, to the exclusion of the study of minute anatomical structure and function which have been distinguished as
