    Wildlife Issues Facing Wildlife Zoos
    Zoos
Zoos engender strong feelings from both advocates and opponents. Because of the complexity of the issues surrounding them, it is problematic to characterize zoos and similar exhibitions of wild animals as a homogenous entity. One basic standard, however, can and must be applied to these institutions: If they are unable to provide animals with appropriate and humane care, they should not have those animals in their facilities. The Humane Society of the United States strongly believes that under most circumstances wild animals should be permitted to exist undisturbed in their natural environments. However, we recognize the widespread existence of zoos and acknowledge that some serve a demonstrable purpose in the long-term benefit of animals, such as the preservation and restoration of endangered species, and the education of people to the needs of wild animals and their role in ecosystems. Yet it is critical for the public to understand that the antiquated zoo of yesteryear did not disappear with the advent of state-of-the-art exhibits that now dominate publicity about modern zoos. The dark side of the story is that thousands of wild animals, many endangered, continue to languish in roadside zoos and menageries. Often the care for these creatures barely meets the minimal federal requirements for exhibiting animals. Unfortunately, only about 10% of the more than 2,000 animal exhibitors licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA).

Zoos: What is so Great About Them?
Almost all of us grow up with fond memories of visiting the zoo with our parents, grandparents or friends. Where else do you get to see those amazing, large elephants? Or these cute monkeys climbing and playing? Or those giraffes with their long, long, long necks? Unless you are able to afford a trip to Kenya, the zoo is the only place where you can see these amazing animals up close.
Zoos: What is so Bad About Them?
I just mentioned what is so great about zoos, but I wouldn't have listed my Zoo pages under "Animal Cruelty", if I didn't think that zoos were bad for the animals that live in them. Enclosures The major problem with zoos is that the animals who live there are kept in enclosures that don't allow them to live their lives in a natural way. No matter how big some zoos try to make the enclosures, no matter how many branches they put in them, no matter how beautiful they make the background paintings on the wall, they don't compare with the natural habitat the animals were meant to be in. Zoo animals have to spend day after day, week after week, year after year in the exact same enclosure. This makes their lives very monotonous.
    Elephants in the Wild
    Elephants at a Zoo
Elephants in the wild for instance, are used to traveling many miles a day in herds of about ten related adults and their offspring. They are very social animals.

    Pros and Cons of Zoos
Today zoos don't just cater to people, but also indulge in research and conservation of wild animals. However, many animal rights activists are not happy with animals being forced to live in unnatural conditions. Thus, it becomes important to know, both the pros and cons of zoos. Zoos
The word zoo, is an abbreviated form of 'zoological garden' and was coined in the nineteenth century. These are collections of various animal species found in nature. The different reasons behind keeping animals in captivity may be education, research, recreation and conservation. The 'zoo' culture can be traced back to the civilization of China Egypt and Mesopotamia. Some of the common types of zoos we know are the urban cage-zoos, safaris and sanctuaries. For a long time, zoos claimed to have conserved endangered animal species; however with number of organizations becoming vocal on the issue of animal rights, people are becoming aware of the truth behind the working of zoos.
    Pros and Cons
Whether animals should be kept in captivity, is a matter of debate. The dicey issue, which is indirectly related to environmental problems, is witnessing heated debates the world over, in the wake of the fear of "
