THE SOCIETY FOR THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION NEWSLETTER VOL 5 NO 3, SPRING 1974:5-7 THE TEACHING OF VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY AT TEMPLE Jay Ruby and Richard Chalfen (A paper originally presented at the 1973 American Anthropological Association Meetings, New Orleans) The teaching of visual anthropology at Temple University has two larger contexts which, to some degree, define and give a specific focus to the training. The first is a departmental philosophy of graduate education and the second is the fact that this training occurs within a program of graduate studies in culture and communication. (Other graduate program emphases include urban anthropology and biocultural adaptation.) Graduate education in anthropology at Temple is based on the traditional assumption that anthropologists should have a foundation in all areas of their discipline. Students are required to pass comprehensive examinations in linguistics, archaeology, and cultural and physical anthropology. Only after successful completion of these exams are students encouraged to specialize. Students with an interest in visual communication pursue their specialty within the broader context of the culture and communication program. The program is designed to train students of anthropology who wish to study various modes of communication in a cultural context. The basic assumption underlying the program is that all communicative, interactive, and expressive forms of behavior are legitimate subjects of anthropological inquiry.

Kenyon.edu People There are few disciplines with as broad a compass as anthropology. Sometimes referred to as the science of humanity, anthropology at Kenyon embraces biological, historical, and cultural study as distinct but interrelated pursuits. Who were the Maya? What does chimpanzee life tell us about ourselves? How do women in Botswana feel about aging? Students with wide-ranging interests and curiosities are drawn to anthropology for a chance to explore the diversity of the human world. The discipline comprises four subfields: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology, and linguistic anthropology. Unusual among undergraduate institutions, Kenyon's Department of Anthropology gives students a balanced exposure to all four subfields. Faculty-Student Research in Vietnam

The history of anthropology at Tulane goes back to 1924, when the Department of Middle American Research (now the Middle American Research Institute) was founded. The first anthropology courses were offered in 1938-1939. By 1947, anthropologists were teaching courses in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. A separate Department of Anthropology was established in 1967. The Department has grown since then. It now has 18 faculty, between 80 and 100 undergraduate anthropology majors, and approximately 60 graduate students.
The Department has four-field programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The faculty includes five cultural anthropologists, four archaeologists, three physical anthropologists, and two linguists. [click on the choices above to learn more about the four fields of anthropology.] The teaching and research interests of the faculty have global reach: North America (the southeastern and southwestern United States), Mesoamerica and Central America (Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, and Costa Rica), South America (Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru), Africa (Egypt, Niger, and Nigeria), Europe (France and Portugal), and Asia (China).

Few anthropology courses at Tulane have specific prerequisites; exceptions, mostly linguistic courses, are noted in the catalogue. Anthropology major are expected to choose their courses from among all those with numbers less than 700. Anthropology
Anthropology is the study of human beings, in particular the study of their physical character, evolutionary history, racial classification, historical and present-day geographic distribution, group relationships, and cultural history. Anthropology can be characterized as the naturalistic description and interpretation of the diverse peoples of the world. Modern-day anthropology consists of two major divisions: cultural anthropology, which deals with the study of human culture in all its aspects; and physical anthropology, which is the study of human physical character, in both the past and present. Anthropology emerged as an independent science in the late 18th century, it developed two divisions: physical anthropology, which focuses on human Evolution and variation, using methods of Physiology, Anthropometry, Genetics , and Ecology ; and cultural anthropology , which includes Archaeology , Ethnology, Social Anthropology, and Linguistics
Cultural Anthropology Cultural anthropology is a major division of anthropology that deals with the study of culture in all its aspects and that uses the methods, concepts, and data of archaeology, ethnography and ethnology, folklore, and linguistics in its descriptions and analyses of the diverse peoples of the world. Modern cultural anthropology as a field of research has its roots in the Age of Discovery, when technologically advanced European cultures came into extended contact with various "traditional" cultures, which for the most part the Europeans grouped indiscriminately under the general rubrics "savage" or "primitive." By the mid-19th century, such questions as the origins of the world's diverse cultures and peoples and their languages had become matters of great interest in western Europe.
