Flint Knapping at 75,000 Years Ago?
Thursday October 28, 2010 Evidence supporting a sophisticated level of flint knapping has been discovered in a Middle Stone Age cave on the south coast of Africa, 25,000 years earlier than previously known.
A Still Bay bifacial point from Blombos Cave made on silcrete and finished, say researchers, by pressure flaking, mainly at the tip. Photo Image Science/AAAS Blombos Cave is one of several rockshelters facing the Indian Coast of South Africa where scholars have traced early evidence of modern human behavior. Tomorrow's publication in Science magazine is the latest in a string of finds-shell beads, engraved bone, heat-treatment of stone tools, red ochre, bone points-that suggest that Early Modern Humans flourished long before the "Creative Explosion" of the Upper Paleolithic. The photo essay " Flint Knapping Technology at Blombos Cave " includes a description of the cave, a discussion of what pressure flaking is, and the evidence identified at Blombos for pressure flaking. Oh, and a bibliography, of course, with some great photos from the research team.

    Mystery Objects from the Field
Anne Raab ( annmraab "at" yahoo.com) has two mystery objects that she needs identified. Here are her comments and the photos:
Does anyone know what these are? My guess is they are parts of an old music box, or some other percussive type instrument. They seem to be either brass or copper. Sorry I don't have a better picture right now. I had to take this one with my phone.
They were found at a farmstead site on the Western Missouri border, with a first European occupation in the 1850's, and last occupied in the early 20th century.
The second object was found at the same site. The material is very chalky, and I am not sure what it is. It was found in multiple pieces, and I originally thought it was some kind of natural calcification that had formed in an insect burrow, giving it its rounded quality. Back in the lab I discovered it all fit together to form this shape. (sorry about the quality of the photo)

Because archaeology employs a wide range of different procedures, it can be considered to be both a science and a humanity and in the United States it is thought of as a branch of anthropology although in Europe it is viewed as a separate discipline. Archaeology studies human history from the development of the first stone tools in eastern Africa 3.4 million years ago up until recent decades. It is of most importance for learning about prehistoric societies , when there are no written records for historians to study, and which makes up over 99% of total human history, from the Palaeolithic until the advent of literacy in any given society.

Pressure flaking , a sophisticated technique used to make stone tools, was invented in southern Africa 75,000 years ago, according to researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder. It had been thought that pressure flaking was first employed 20,000 years ago in Europe.  You can compare a tool made by pressure flaking with one made by a hammer at Science Now X-rays have revealed that two Civil War era dolls shipped to the Confederacy from Europe had hollowed-out heads. Students who focus on archaeology as part of their major or minor learn to become better critical thinkers and enhance their analytic and writing skills. Our faculty's interests range from the archaeology of human origins and the evolutionary ecology of early hominids, to research in culture contact studies, household production, identity, and lithic and ceramic technologies. We also have a unique program focused on ethics and the social context of archaeological research. We have strong programs in the archaeology of North America, Mexico and the Caribbean, and in paleoanthropology in Africa. Susan Alt Laura Scheiber Sonya Atalay Kathy Schick ...
