ARCHAEOLOGY (from Gr. apxaia, ancient things, and Xe yos, theory or science), a general term for the study of antiquities. The precise application of the term has varied from time to time with the progress of knowledge, according to the character of the subjects investigated and the purpose for which they were studied. At one time it was thought improper to use it in relation to any but the artistic remains of Greece and Rome i.e. the so-called classical archaeology (now dealt with in this encyclopaedia under the headings of Greek Art and Roman Art ); but of late years it has commonly been accepted as including the whole range of ancient human activity, from the first traceable appearance of man on the earth to the middle ages . It may thus be conceived how vast a field archaeology embraces, and how intimately it is connected with the sciences of geology and anthropology , while it naturally includes within its borders the consideration of all the civilizations of ancient times. In dealing with so vast a subject, it becomes necessary to distinguish. The archaeology of zoological species constitutes the sphere of

closing dates for applications: 1 May 2004 ('A' Level students) The Department of Archaeology , University of Bristol, in conjunction with Exmoor National Park Authority , are delighted to announce the third season of this field school in field archaeology and prehistory. The project is a joint initiative with the Exmoor National Park Authority, and is based at a Mesolithic site at Hawkcombe Head, near Porlock in the Exmoor National Park, Somerset. Activity on the site dating from the later Mesolithic period (c.7000-4000 BC) has been previously identified through the recovery of flint tools and structural features. The field school aims to find out more about Mesolithic hunter-gatherer activity in the Hawkcombe Head Landscape. Applications to participate in the field school are invited from British 'A' Level students. The project is funded by the Widening Participation Initiative at the University of Bristol (WP) to take 'A' Level students (17 years and above). All student placements are fully funded by WP. We welcome applications from schools and sixth form colleges for these fully-funded places, which will be awarded on a competitive basis. Futher details are available from Dr Paula Gardiner:

    ARCHAEOLOGY
Between 1450 and 1600 ancient Rome began to emerge from beneath the shapeless pastures and deserted hills of the ancient city. Renaissance scholars identified major sites and buildings. They began the great effort of copying the ancient inscriptions that made the city itself a vast, if fragmentary, textbook about Roman history and life.
    Learning to Read Rome's Ruins
The Origins of Archaeology: Scholars Read the City
By the fourteenth century, Italian intellectuals were becoming fascinated by the physical as well as the literary relics of the ancient world. Rome, of course, had the grandest of all ruins, at which medieval pilgrims had long marvelled. The Roman in the street was happy to provide misinformation about sites and statues, but in the Renaissance, scholars began to measure, excavate, and identify the statues and buildings that had long amazed travellers. True, much was lost forever. When Poggio Bracciolini and a friend climbed the Capitoline Hill in 1430, the vast view that opened out before them was a desert; the ancient forum was populated only by pigs, deer, and vegetables. But by the end of the fifteenth century, Roman scholars had identified the sites of many lost buildings, compiled notebooks bulging with information, and begun to recreate the ancient city.
