Area Studies
Whether our destination is just around the next bend or on the opposite side of the globe, we all share the human spirit of adventure. Our planet is an astonishingly beautiful home, with a rich and intricate tapestry of human cultures, natural landscapes, and biota. The curriculum in Area Studies provides a foundation for understanding and appreciating this diversity. Current courses in the Area Studies curriculum focus on select regions of faculty expertise (Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the U.S. and Canada), the distinctiveness of place that arises from the interaction of culture and environment, the role of international politics in preserving or dissolving regional identities, and the forces of globalization driving cultures, societies, and individuals toward greater commonality. Students having completed the undergraduate degree in Geography with a specialization in Area Studies have gone on to successful careers in: international business, foreign relations, travel and tourism, geographic education, community development, immigration services, Peace Corps, census, cartographic and geographic publishing, and secondary education, and pursued graduate degrees in geography, education, and law.

The School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies (SIAS) is part of the Social Sciences Division. It represents a major commitment by the University to enhancing teaching and research in Area Studies. The School brings together six units: the African Studies Centre, the Latin American Centre (including the Brazilian Studies Programme), the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies, China Studies (including the Contemporary China Studies Programme), the Russian and East European Studies Programme, and the Contemporary South Asia Studies Programme. In addition, the School encourages academic co-operation with a number of related academic activities which have their principal home in the Humanities Division. The School is devoted to research and graduate teaching in academic disciplines which attempt to understand the complexity and the interrelatedness of society through anthropology, economics, politics, history, sociology and culture. Its teaching and research seek to take into account both the insights provided by the separate disciplines and the contextualisation provided by in-depth knowledge of specific regions and countries.

    Subject benchmark statements
Subject benchmark statements provide a means for the academic community to describe the nature and characteristics of programmes in a specific subject. They also represent general expectations about the standards for the award of qualifications at a given level and articulate the attributes and capabilities that those possessing such qualifications should be able to demonstrate. This Subject benchmark statement , together with the others published concurrently, refers to the bachelors degree with honours. Subject benchmark statements are used for a variety of purposes. Primarily, they are an important external source of reference for higher education institutions when new programmes are being designed and developed in a subject area. They provide general guidance for articulating the learning outcomes associated with the programme but are not a specification of a detailed curriculum in the subject. Benchmark statements provide for variety and flexibility in the design of programmes and encourage innovation within an agreed overall framework.
