The Area Studies Programs at the University of Delaware provide an opportunity for coherent and systematic study of Africa, East Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the Islamic world. Many career opportunities are open to students who major and minor in Area Studies. Because of their in-depth knowledge, graduates of these programs often find employment in government, non-governmental organizations and aid agencies, education, and international business and banking. In addition, training in one of these programs provides a solid foundation for graduate study.

REQUIREMENTS FOR AREA STUDIES COURSES
Any course approved by individual area studies curricula will count as an area studies course for the International Studies major, provided:
1. It meets the contemporary focus requirement, as stipulated in the Course Requirements section of the website.
2. The predominant focus of the course is not language instruction. Courses that are predominantly language instruction will NOT count as area studies courses for the International Studies major.
3. The course must have the appropriate geographical content. Courses that are not area-specific, even if they appear on the area studies websites ' lists, will NOT qualify as INTS area courses.
4. Do not assume that courses on Area Studies Websites automatically count as area courses with International Studies.

    Program Description
    Program Brochure PDF (102K) MS Word (36K) The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to institutions of higher education or consortia of institutions of higher education to assist meritorious undergraduate students and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area or international studies. Eligible students apply for fellowships directly to an institution that has received an allocation of fellowships from the U.S. Department of Education.
    Types of Projects
    FLAS grants (allocations of fellowships) are awarded to institutions for a four-year project period. Institutions conduct competitions to select eligible undergraduate students and graduate students to receive fellowships, in accordance with FLAS program eligibility requirements and the institutions’ FLAS selection procedures.
