WE'RE #1! We celebrated last week, after the National Research Council released their rankings of university doctoral programs. Our department was ranked #1 in our field. See The Chronicle of Higher Education for further information, and a web-based tool to examine up to 5000 university doctoral programs.
The Cognitive Science Department provides theoretically-oriented research and training opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and post doctoral fellows. As a fully autonomous academic unit, we provide a focused environment that is wholly dedicated to the multi-disciplinary intellectual challenge of integrating contemporary approaches to the study of the mind/brain. Cognitive Science

(Expanded from the set included in the Companion to Cognitive Science Blackwell, 1988)
Hundreds of researchers have made significant contributions to cognitive science. What follows is a set of short academic biographies of people whom we believe should be counted on anyone's list of important contributors; the work of many of them is discussed in the Companion . Not every important figure is included; and some people are included, especially from the history of cognitive science, who would not describe, or could not have described, themselves as cognitive scientists despite their considerable impact on the field. We trust that the list will be useful to students doing research in cognitive science and to readers who wish to familiarize themselves with the work of specific contributors. While this list has been expanded beyond that included in the Companion to Cognitive Science , it is still very incomplete. As time permits, we will add entries, but we welcome anyone who wants to supply material, either on themselves or another cognitive scientist. We would also welcome updates on anyone who is included, especially information about changes in their academic affiliation. A B C D ... H I J K L M ... N O P Q R S ... Connexions was founded in 1997 as an online journal for work-in-progress within the cognitive sciences. The project was the idea of Gavin Boyce and Keith Frankish, who were both PhD students in philosophy at the University of Sheffield. Tom Dickins, then a PhD student in the Department of Human Communication Sciences, was soon recruited to the project and, with help from a number of colleagues and sponsorship from the Hang Seng Centre for Cognitive Studies (chaired by Peter Carruthers), two issues a year were produced during 1997 and 1998. When the original editors moved on, the project was taken over by Tom Simpson, also from the Sheffield Philosophy department, and a fifth issue appeared in 2001. The journal subsequently reverted to Tom and Keith and sixth issue was produced in 2003 in an open peer commentary format. Connexions

As one of the few genuine departments of cognitive science in the world, we offer unique and exciting opportunities for students to focus on the scientific study of mind, brain, and intelligence. Staffed by a core of cognitive-science oriented psychologists, philosophers, and computer scientists, the department complements Rensselaer's traditional strengths in science, engineering, and technology, and is widely regarded as a leader in the area of computational cognitive modeling. We offer a highly selective PhD program in Cognitive Science, and BS programs in both Psychology and Philosophy. Faculty research interests include computational cognitive modeling, artificial intelligence, human and machine reasoning, computational linguistics, perception and action, theoretical neuroscience, cognitive robotics, cognitive engineering and advanced synthetic characters. Cognitive Science
Cognitive Science is an interdisciplinary inquiry concerned with understanding the nature and development of such intelligent capacities as perception, language, reasoning, learning and problem-solving, whether these capacities are realized in biological or artificial systems. Such inquiry is by its very nature interdisciplinary, integrating methodological, theoretical and practical foci of Biology Computer Science Philosophy and Psychology into a single course of study. The cognitive science major is a broad major and does not require that a student complete a minor in addition to the major. Each Cognitive Science major will concentrate in one of the four participating disciplines: Biology, Computer Science, Philosophy and Psychology. Interested students should talk with faculty in their field of interest as soon as possible in order to guarantee that pre-requisites are met. Course information can be found in the
