Disability studies
Disability studies is an interdisciplinary field of study, which is focused on the contributions, experiences, history, and culture of people with disabilities . The field of teaching and research in the area of disability studies is growing worldwide. Disability studies is based on the premise that the disadvantage typically experienced by those who are disabled reflects primarily the way societydefines and responds to certain types of 'difference'.[1] In 1993an official definition of disability studies was adopted by the Society for Disability Studies , a professional organization of academics from around the world. The Society for Disability Studies offers the following working guidelines for any program that describes itself as 'Disability Studies':[2]
  • It should be interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary. Disability sits at the center of many overlapping disciplines in the humanities , sciences , and social sciences . Programs in Disability Studies should encourage a curriculum that allows students, activists , teachers, artists, practitioners, and researchers to engage the subject matter from various disciplinary perspectives.

Disability Studies
One simply has to consider the volume of the books, articles and journals emerging over the last decade to appreciate the number of individuals and organizations getting behind a field of study whose time has come. Just as women s studies attempts to place women in a social, political and cultural context, so disability studies attempts to place disability in this context and to examine how social structures shape the experience of people with disabilities.
In 1993 an official definition of disability studies was adopted by the Society for Disability Studies, a professional organization of academics from around the world. The definition states that disability studies, among other things, "examines the policies and practices of all societies to understand the social, rather than the physical or psychological, determinants of the experience of disability. Disability Studies has been developed to disentangle impairments from the myth, ideology and stigma that influence social interaction and social policy. The scholarship challenges the idea that the economic and social statuses and the assigned roles of people with disabilities are inevitable outcomes of their condition."
Lennard Davis, in his introduction to "The Disability Studies Reader," suggests that disability studies has its roots in both activism and academia: "Like the appearance of African American studies following rapidly on the heels of the civil rights movement, there is a reciprocal relationship between political praxis by people with disabilities and the formation of a discursive category of disability studies."

Ed Roberts Fellowships in Disability Studies A new research program, led by English professor Susan Schweik and city planning professor Fred Collignon, aims to train advanced scholars to become leaders in disability studies and rehabilitation research, teaching and mentorship. Based at UC Berkeley, a consortium of universities, research institutes and disability agencies across the San Francisco Bay Area will recruit people with advanced professional degrees who want to broaden their theoretical outlook and their disability research methodological skills. In particular, the researchers will recruit scholars with significant disabilities from minority groups who have not had the opportunity for collaborative cross-disciplinary research study of disability that includes social science and the humanities. Three 9-month fellowships will be funded each year for five years. The training program has five components: Research mentorship seminar
Each Fellow will be matched with a senior faculty mentor and will participate as a mentor for a matched undergraduate disability studies student.

    Introduction to Disability Studies
    Vision of Disability Studies
Disability Studies at Temple University offers a course of studies exploring the historical, cultural and socio-political challenges and accomplishments of the disability community. Persons with disabilities and their allies inform the our curriculum and methods of instruction. Disability Studies challenges the notion that the statuses and roles of individuals with disability are determined by their physical or physiological circumstances. By approaching disability from the perspective of human diversity and universality, the program promotes a more accurate understanding and appreciation of people with disabilities and the evolution of their civil rights movement; it also invites students to reflect on how the study of disability relates to professional, social and personal aspects of their lives.

Welcome to the Disability Studies Program at The Ohio State University!
Disability Studies at The Ohio State University examines the nature, meaning, and consequences of disability in global culture from an integrated social, political, cultural model. It incorporates historical, phenomenological, political, cultural, medical, sociological, technological, educational, and legal perspectives in order to provide an enriched and coherent view of disability as part of universal human experience, by understanding and analyzing disability as a phenomenon that simultaneously manifests itself at the bodily, person, and societal levels. The Ohio State University has offered an undergraduate minor in Disability Studies since 2003. In 2006, OSU began offering a

  • Disability Studies as an interdisciplinary field of academic inquiry began to emerge in the 1970s in the United States and in the United Kingdom. Today, Disability Studies is a nearly global phenomenon with universities in Scandinavia, Asia, Europe and South Africa offering minors, certificates, graduate, and undergraduate degrees in the field. Disability Studies grew out of the Independent Living movements, and gained momentum as people with disabilities and their advocates began deeper and more active engagement in the political process so as to effect changes in public policy. With its basis in social activism, many disability theorists began to question the exclusive focus on disability as a sickness or impairment that needed to be corrected and favored a theoretical approach that takes into account the ways in which society uses images and language to shape notions of ability/disability.

About the disabilitystudies.net disabilitystudies.net is the webspace of a growing network of academics, researchers and activists throughout the UK and beyond, who share an interest in disability studies.
Disability studies is concerned with the inter-disciplinary development of an increasing body of knowledge and practice, which has arisen from the activities of the disabled people's movement, and which has come to be known as 'the social model of disability'. The social model of disability locates the changing character of disability, which is viewed as an important dimension of inequality, in the social and economic structure and culture of the society in which it is found, rather than in individual limitations.

During the first hour two esteemed professors hosted a dialogue on integrating choreography with the emerging discipline of disability studies. Petra Kuppers, a disability culture activist as well as a professor of performance in disability studies at the University of Michigan along with Victoria Marks, a professor of performance in the World Arts and Cultures department at UCLA lead the discussion. Following a short reception, the conversation transformed into dance with a performance by the AXIS Dance Company, an ensemble of performers with and without disabilities that changed the way we think about dance and the human body.
