In these programs, students will gain a broad understanding of the historical and contemporary experiences of four major racialized groups in the United States: Asian American, African American, Native American and Chicana(o)/ Latina(o), as well as other national and international ethnic groups. All undergraduate Ethnic Studies students are required to take three core courses: Introduction to Ethnic Studies (ETST100), Race Formations in the U.S. (ETST404) or Ethnicity, Class and Gender (ETST405), and Ethnic Studies Research Methods and Writing (ETST493). In addition, students must take one elective course from each of the four major groups.

Welcome to Ethnic Studies
What is Ethnic Studies?
Ethnic Studies is the study of race and ethnicity in U.S. and transnational contexts. Students and faculty in this area examine how social categories like race, indigeneity, culture, ethnicity, and nation are conceptualized. We also familiarize ourselves with the experiences of the major population groups that make up the United States. We look at the specifics of these experiences as well as comparing them across groups. We are interested in both the contemporary world and how history has shaped it.
What makes ISU's program attractive?
The program at Illinois State allows participants to examine regional, national, and global dimensions of these experiences. In particular, students take courses focusing on the history and contemporary dynamics of both the United States itself and of the countries outside of Europe (including the First Nations of the Americas) from which significant parts of our populations have emigrated or originated.

The College of Ethnic Studies was established in Fall 1969 through the efforts of a number of dedicated students, faculty and community members. The four departments - Asian American Studies, Africana Studies, Raza Studies, and American Indian Studies - offer over 175 courses each semester to meet the needs of 6000 students. Our curriculum assists students complete their general education, pursue a personal interest in ethnic studies, teach Ethnic Studies subjects in elementary, secondary, community and college level institutions: or combine this with professional and vocational skills such as business, social welfare, law, and medicine. The Ethnic Studies field is unique as an educational experience that redefines the lives of people of color from their own perspectives. This is implemented through the efforts of students, faculty and members of the community who hold that meaningful education is a result of their cooperative efforts to provide resources and curricula to the university and the community at large.
