Ethnic Studies Major/Minor
The Ethnic Studies major allows students to complete a comparative and integrative program of studies focused on experiences of racially and ethnically diverse groups and individuals in the United States, and to explore international origins and linkages. The major encompasses theoretical and methodological courses, comparative courses, and focused topical courses that will provide students with the skills to conduct the needed rigorous analysis of the experiences of diverse populations. This major will be of interest and value to students who are interested in exploring the historical experiences of ethnically diverse individuals or groups as a primary interest, ad well as those preparing for careers that will involve working with diverse populations. The U.S. population is becoming increasingly diverse, due to population shifts linked to ongoing immigration and differential birthrates. According to U.S. Census Bureau projections, by 2050 non-Hispanic Whites will represent just one half of the population. Majoring in Ethnic Studies will prepare students for the U.S. of the future.

March 13, 2010 by admin Harvard foolishly politicizes its curriculum By Patrick T. Brennan This school year, Harvard has added a new secondary field, ethnic studies, and hired its first Egyptology professor in seventy years. Both could be said to satisfy student demand. Ethnic studies has been the academic idée fixe of the Crimson and various ethnic student associations for more than a decade, and archaeology concentrators are delighted to have a professor with expertise in the world’s most important archaeological area. The clear difference is that Harvard was quite remiss in not having an Egyptology chair, while there is no need for any more emphasis on so-called “ethnic studies.” When the University agrees that its curriculum needs to change to address “the growing diversity of our campus” or any other imaginary concern of its students, it opens itself up to politically motivated efforts like ethnic studies. Tragically, worthwhile academic subjects like Egyptology have also been subsumed into the larger effort of emphasizing diversity and ascribing significance to the insignificant, as demonstrated by Professor Christopher P. Jones’s comments that “Egypt is a major African civilization,” and that “it is very important that Africa should be a part of what everyone thinks about the modern world.” Egypt is a worthwhile subject not because it is an African civilization, but because it represents an incredibly sophisticated and important ancient civilization that happens to be African—let alone the fact that the Egyptians pharaohs, with the exception of 75 years of Nubian rule, were about as “African” as Ian Smith. Harvard should have an Egyptology department, or at least devote some of its resources to the study of a civilization which has had such profound influence on the world. It need not offer a course on African civilizations if there is none worthy of study. The progressive priorities of Harvard’s curriculum usually do not coincide, however, with the promotion of meaningful areas of study.

Who We Are, Where We've Been
The headlines are full of questions about ethnicity in America. Does immigration benefit society? What are the implications of having a black president in the White House? Are census questions about race outdated? At the University of Oregon, the Department of Ethnic Studies takes an interdisciplinary approach to explore the answers to these questions and more. The department offers classes in a host of areas from history and literature, to government and cultural anthropology. Politics, health care, and education are just a few of the areas where race and culture intersect, and these intersections interest the scholars at the UO. Shari Huhndorf . A degree in ethnic studies prepares students who go on to careers as varied as law, business, community organizing, and government. Cultural competency is increasingly important as the world becomes smaller and people from different cultures connect, overlap, and learn from each other. Study at the UO and learn to navigate the territory. The world needs your perspective and leadership in this important area.

The major in ethnic studies exposes students to those historical, economic, social and political forces that have contoured the crosscultural and ethnic experience within and outside the United States. This program prepares the students to cope with social injustice (e.g., racism, discrimination, social conflict) effectively and also provides students with multicultural/ethnic knowledge, multicultural/ethnic values and skills (e.g., cultural competency skills and other professional skills) so that ES majors will be academically strong and competitive in the job market. ES majors must take both ES core courses and skill-oriented or applied courses that focus on one of the following areas: Governmental/Public Area, Business/Corporate Area, Community/Human Services Area, and Extended Program courses.

  • Undergraduate ... Undergraduate Ethnic Studies The Ethnic Studies Department prepares Mills students for leadership and development in an increasingly multicultural, transnational, and globalized society by studying the rich history of ethnic and racial diversity in the United States from the perspectives of peoples of color. The department's curriculum promotes critical thinking and creative analysis through comparative study of the social, economic, cultural, and environmental concerns and contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives, African Americans, Latinas/os and Chicanas/os, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders. At Mills, we examine racial dynamics as they intersect with gender, sexuality, class, and nation, and many of our courses focus on the unique experiences of women of color. Our curriculum also explores the transnational and diasporic dimensions of racial identities.
Our faculty enable students to become involved in research and activism in local communities of color, thus making exciting connections with the vibrant diversity of the Bay Area. Recent student research interests include Latino healthcare in California, American Indian legal history, black vernacular language and humor, the emerging Latino vote, experiences of multiracial Filipinas/os, educational outcomes of Marshallese immigrant youth, and girls of color in the juvenile justice system. In addition, many of our courses include a service learning component that offers students an opportunity to learn through hands-on engagements with local, community-based organizations. Courses with a service learning component offer a .25 credit for volunteer work with an organization working on social justice issues related to communities of color. Students may take one service learning course per semester.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Faculty and students in the Ethnic Studies Department examine race and ethnicity in the United States with a primary focus on people of African, Asian, Latina/o, and Native American descent. The first Committee on Ethnic Studies at the University of Oregon was formed in 1969 and completed a proposal for an Ethnic Studies Program in 1972. This resulted in the creation of the Program in Folklore and Ethnic Studies. Ethnic Studies and Folklore separated in 1994, and, in 1997, a major in Ethnic Studies was added to the minor that was already offered. Ethnic Studies gained full departmental status in 2008. In addition to the eight faculty positions appointed or jointly appointed in the Department, Ethnic Studies also has at any one time outside faculty members with core appointments who dedicate a portion of their university service to departmental governance. We also have a faculty Advisory Board and around 30 affiliated faculty members from across the University, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Education, and the School of Law. Our junior faculty include three recipients of outstanding teaching awards and two recipients of the Ralph Henry Gabriel Dissertation Prize for best doctoral dissertation from the American Studies Association. The Department and its related Center for Race, Ethnicity, and Sexuality Studies (CRESS)
