Program Description The Department of Ethnic Studies is central to the university's commitment "to educational excellence for a diverse society." It offers a major, minors, and courses that are interdisciplinary in nature and provide a holistic approach to the study of the United States' multiracial, multicultural, and multigender immigrant society. The department's faculty provide areas of study that integrate social science and literary theory, as well as anthropological and sociological concepts within a historical and humanistic perspective. The underlying goal of Ethnic Studies is to provide a better understanding of diversity in American culture and thought. The Ethnic Studies major consists of a core of Ethnic Studies courses, support courses in other departments in the university, and Options in African American, Asian American, Genders and Sexualities in Communities of Color, Latino/a, and Native American Studies. The curriculum is multidisciplinary as well as interdisciplinary. The major helps the student qualify for graduate work in social sciences, law, and humanities, and for work in municipal, state, and federal government. Of equal importance are the advantages the major provides to work in community service organizations concerned with opportunities and problems of various ethnic and racial groups.

What is Ethnic Studies? The Mission: Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary program which develops fundamental skills in critical and global thinking and in comparative analysis, as well as an understanding of the interactions of race, class, gender, and sexuality in the experiences of a range of social groups. It is designed to bring together a community of students, faculty and staff devoted to the transmission of knowledge and the discovery of new ideas in the field of ethnic studies. Minor Requirements Events Download Brochure Anthropology at UNT ... Ethnic Studies Home Ethnic Studies Overview The ethnic studies program provides students an understanding of the complex issues surrounding racial and cultural differences in the United States. Students gain insights into the historical, political, social and popular aspects of ethnicity and will develop an informed view of how and why race continues to shape social reality in the United States. Businesses, institutions, and governmental agencies are increasingly aware of the need to acknowledge and address the complexity of ethnic and race relations. Employers seek individuals who demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively and the ability to work well with others. The Ethnic Studies program provides a set of skills and knowledge beneficial to many students and especially to the following groups: Primary Education Teachers, Social Workers, Human Services-related professionals, Business Majors, Liberal Arts Majors, and Law and public service professionals. This program takes racial and ethnic identities and inequalities as its subject and serves, in the process, as a broader base of support for minority students on college campuses. It also strives to 1) draw more broadly from the student body; and 2) infuse distinctive ethnic studies theoretical, methodological and archival perspectives into the subjects and issues addressed throughout the curriculum. Courses in ethnic studies offer varied theoretical and historical perspectives about racial and ethnic groups in such areas as family, gender, literature, politics and world cultures. At UNT, Ethnic Studies is a university wide program of study, administered through the

ETHNIC STUDIES
College of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Ethnic Studies is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the cultures, languages, historical, and contemporary issues relating to African Americans, Asian Americans, Chicana/os-Latina/os, and Native Americans. The program directs students to critically examine the cultural contributions made by these groups to world civilization and to American society. Ethnic Studies challenges all students to analyze existing generalizations, theories, and concepts about racial and ethnic groups in order to develop valid generalizations, concepts, and theories about the people and their experiences. Students are encouraged to actively work to eliminate problems based on discrimination. Students are also encouraged to blend professional area studies with Ethnic Studies. For example, a student may major in Ethnic Studies and minor in Business Administration. Similarly, students with a degree in Engineering Technology may minor in Ethnic Studies and emerge well-prepared professionally to assume middle management and supervisory positions in a multicultural society. Ethnic Studies majors and minors enter careers and professions in both the public and private sectors. Program advising and other information can be obtained from the Ethnic Studies Office.

Radhanath Swami - Introduction to Journey Home Book By Radhanath Swami Over the years many people have pressed Radhanath Swami to write this story. He resisted, considering it inappropriate to write a book about himselfself, until something happened to change his mind. In May of 2005 his lifelong friend Bhakti Tirtha Swami called him. He was dying and wanted Radhanath Swami to be with him. Bhakti Tirtha Swami was an African American who rose from the ghetto of Cleveland to become a world spiritual teacher whose admirers included, among others, Nelson Mandela, Muhammed Ali and Alice Coltrane.
Within this extraordinary memoir, Radhanath Swami weaves a colorful tapestry of adventure, mysticism and love. Readers follow Richard Slavin from the suburbs of Chicago to the caves of the Himalayas as he transforms from young seeker to renowned spiritual guide. The Journey Home is an intimate account of the steps to self-awareness and also a penetrating glimpse into the heart of mystic traditions and the challenges that all souls must face on the road to inner harmony and a union with the Divine.
Through near-death encounters, apprenticeships with advanced yogis, and years of travel along the pilgrim's path

Welcome to Ethnic Studies Department at California Polytechic State University
Ethnic Studies at Cal Poly uses inter- and multidisciplinary approaches to study the lives of Indigenous, African, Latino/a, and Asian peoples in the United States within a global and postcolonial context. It is an important and valuable area of study that is indispensable to the academic experience of all students. With this understanding, a program in Ethnic Studies was established here in 1992. The expectation was that the program would continue to evolve and flourish and play an increasingly significant role in the life of the university. Thus, in 1994, the Ethnic Studies Program developed into the Ethnic Studies Department and a minor in Ethnic Studies was approved by the Academic Senate. The Ethnic Studies curriculum provides students with unique forms of critical inquiry that advance their analysis of race, ethnicity, and cultural difference in an increasingly heterogeneous and complex world. Courses in Ethnic Studies examine how social hierarchies frame access to political power, allocate economic resources, and influence cultural expression. By critically exploring such issues, students develop not only a greater understanding of the legacy of racism, discrimination, and injustices in the United States, but also a greater appreciation for new and emerging knowledge about diverse American peoples and their global and transnational connections.
