East to America: Korea-American Life Stories by Eui-Young Yu and Elaine Kim
    FROM PUBLISHERS WEEKLY.
Overview. The Center for Korean-American and Korean Studies (CKAKS) is dedicated to serving as a focal point of Korean American and Korean studies in the Los Angeles area. It was originally established to coordinate studies on Korean culture and tradition, to compile data on the Korean-American community and its activities, to systematically analyze and document the achievements and problems of the Korean-American community, and to develop bi-cultural curriculum materials on Koreans and Korean cultural traditions. More specifically, CKAKS' main objectives have been to promote, coordinate, and conduct research and publication activities related to Korean-American and Korean studies; to sponsor conferences, seminars, symposia and exhibits; and to serve as a cultural resource and research center for the local community. Since the Center's establishment in 1979, all these objectives have been achieved.
    community involvement
CKAKS has become a major source for the dissemination of information and research for Korean American studies, particularly in the Southern California region. Whenever major events occur that involve or impact the Korean community (such as the 1992 Los Angeles riots and the Virginia Tech Massacre), major news media (e.g., the

About the Ethnic Conflict Research Digest

The Ethnic Conflict Research Digest publishes peer reviews of recently published books, journal articles and research papers on the dynamics and management of ethnic conflict. It aims to aid the dissemination of new research in a growing academic field. The study of ethnic conflict has become multi-disciplinary, thus benefiting from a variety of different sources and approaches. The downside of this multi-disciplinary approach, however, is the unfocused nature of many debates. The Digest attempts, in a small way, to redress this problem. The Digest is aimed at both academics and policy-makers. It can act as a briefing tool for those working at the policy-making level of governments and non-governmental organisations who may not have the time to review the latest academic literature on ethnic conflict. All the reviews are available on this website, in some cases months before they appear in hardcopy. The reviews can be

    • Undergraduate ... Undergraduate Ethnic Studies The Ethnic Studies Department prepares Mills students for leadership and development in an increasingly multicultural, transnational, and globalized society by studying the rich history of ethnic and racial diversity in the United States from the perspectives of peoples of color. The department's curriculum promotes critical thinking and creative analysis through comparative study of the social, economic, cultural, and environmental concerns and contributions of American Indians and Alaska Natives, African Americans, Latinas/os and Chicanas/os, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders. At Mills, we examine racial dynamics as they intersect with gender, sexuality, class, and nation, and many of our courses focus on the unique experiences of women of color. Our curriculum also explores the transnational and diasporic dimensions of racial identities.
Our faculty enable students to become involved in research and activism in local communities of color, thus making exciting connections with the vibrant diversity of the Bay Area. Recent student research interests include Latino healthcare in California, American Indian legal history, black vernacular language and humor, the emerging Latino vote, experiences of multiracial Filipinas/os, educational outcomes of Marshallese immigrant youth, and girls of color in the juvenile justice system. In addition, many of our courses include a service learning component that offers students an opportunity to learn through hands-on engagements with local, community-based organizations. Courses with a service learning component offer a .25 credit for volunteer work with an organization working on social justice issues related to communities of color. Students may take one service learning course per semester.
