Compared to ethnography , the study of single groups through direct contact with the culture, ethnology takes the research that ethnographers have compiled and then compares and contrasts different cultures. The term ethnology is credited to Adam Franz Kollár who used and defined it in his Historiae ivrisqve pvblici Regni Vngariae amoenitates published in Vienna in 1783. Kollár's interest in linguistic and cultural diversity was aroused by the situation in his native multi-lingual Kingdom of Hungary and his roots among its Slovaks , and by the shifts that began to emerge after the gradual retreat of the Ottoman Empire in the more distant Balkans Among the goals of ethnology have been the reconstruction of human history , and the formulation of cultural invariants , such as the incest taboo and culture change, and the formulation of generalizations about "

http://www.masterho.com/ethnolog.htm
Ethnology One of the four subdivisions of anthropology, the others being physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. Ethnology is concerned with the study of cultures in their traditional forms and in their adaptations to changing conditions in the modern world. Ethnography, the observational branch of ethnology, describes each culture, including its language, the physical characteristics of its people, its material products, and its social customs. In describing a particular tribe, for example, eth nographers gather information about its location and geographical environment. They also investigate all aspects of its culture, including food, shelter, dress, transportation, and manufacture of the tribe; its customs regarding government, property, and division of labor; its patterns of production and exchange; its customs regarding birth, adulthood initiation rites, marriage, and death; its religious ideas relating to magic, supernatural beings, and the universe; as well as its artistic, mythological, and ceremonial interpretations of its natural and social environment. Ethnologists are concerned with all aspects of culture in the contemporary world and attempt to present a perspective from which to understand modern society. They stress the observation and collection of actual data. In comparing the social organization of variant societies, ethnologists emphasize the interrelationship between the individual and the family, clan, tribe, and other groups (for example, social, political, religious) that may exist within a society. In making comparisons, ethnologists must differentiate between responses peculiar to the society and those that are general to humankind. This differentiation clarifies the role of learned behavior in the development of distinctive cultures. Some studies analyze relationships between social phenomena and ecological adaptations.

ETHNOLOGY and Ethnography (from the Gr. g Ovos, race, and Xoyos, science, or y to write), sciences which in their narrowest sense deal respectively with man as a racial unit ( mankind), i.e. his development through the family and tribal stages into national life, and with the distribution over the earth of the races and nations thus formed. Though the etymology of the words permits in theory of this line of division between ethnology and ethnography, in practice they form an indivisible study of man's progress from the point at which anthropology leaves him. Ethnology is thus the general name for investigations of the widest character, including subjects which in this encyclopaedia are dealt with in detail under separate headings, such as Archaeology, Art (and allied articles), Commerce, Geography (and the headings for countries and tribes), Family, Name, Ethics, Law, Mythology, Folk-Lore (and allied articles), Philology (and allied articles), Agriculture, Architecture, Religion, Sociology hunting and fishing, ( b sheep and cattle tending, (

Equally strong is the Alaskan Arctic collection with 6,500-pieces, including basketry, kayaks, tools, and contemporary carvings. The collections of the Western Sub-arctic, Plateau, Plains, Great Lakes, and Southwest cultures includes baskets, beadwork, parfleches, weavings, and pottery. The Native North American basketry collection numbers over 5,200. Pacific Rim collections from throughout Asia and the Pacific Islands include nearly 15,000 items such as kava bowls, porcelain, dance masks, and samurai armor. Dene. Late 1800's. The Ethnology program interprets the culture and history of the indigenous peoples of the world. While the primary emphasis is on First Nations and Metis peoples of the Northern Plains and Subarctic, the collections feature materials from other regions of North America, particularly the western Arctic and Great Lakes, as well as Africa, Australia, and Japan. Objects in the collections date from the mid-1800s to the present. The Ethnology collections are an invaluable resource for a wide variety of people interested in Alberta's history and cultural diversity. Individuals researching family and community history regularly consult the collections, as do university students conducting research projects in the fields of anthropology, history, Native studies, and clothing and textiles. The public school system incorporates Ethnology program materials into its curriculum, and Ethnology staff responds to numerous inquiries about First Nations and Metis cultures from members of the public and cultural heritage professionals. Staff members work in partnership with First Nations and Metis communities on cultural heritage projects, and the Ethnology program manages a summer internship program in Museology for Aboriginal university students.
