For the magazine of the Royal Geographical Society, see Geographical (magazine) For other uses, see Geography (disambiguation) Map of the Earth Geography (from Greek geographia , lit. "earth describe-write" ) is the study of the Earth and its lands, features, inhabitants, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write about the Earth". The first person to use the word "geography" was Eratosthenes (276-194 B.C.). Four historical traditions in geographical research are the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena (geography as a study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), study of man-land relationship, and research in earth sciences Nonetheless, modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to understand the Earth and all of its human and natural complexities—not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. Geography has been called 'the world discipline'. As "the bridge between the human and physical sciences ," geography is divided into two main branches— human geography and physical geography Part of a series on Science Natural sciences Astronomy

    What is Geography?
Geography, at the start of the new century, is a comparatively small but lively and challenging academic discipline providing a distinctive approach to many of today's societal problems and issues: economic and social inequality; cost and quality of health care delivery systems, urban and suburban growth; efficient transport systems, patterns of food supply and hunger, health and disease, education and child labor; environmental and pollution problems; economic impacts of natural catastrophies (floods, earthquakes), appropriate utilization of water and energy resources; local and locational repercussions of new communications technologies; the activities and behaviors of transnational corporations; and many more.
The Geography Department has over the years developed a strong emphasis on Economic and Business Geography. [See also:
