  • Brand New Images/Digital Vision/Getty Images Geograhy is the complete study of a place, including people and land. Teaching students about the world in which they live can be creative and informative. Geography goes beyond just the basic teachings of where a city is located. The subject can examine an entire region, a city's residents, land and water masses, food and other characteristics that are unique to the area.
  • Geography Bee
  • Teachers can organize a geography bee to teach students about a particular region or country. During a geography bee, students are individually quizzed on different places around the world, including the cultures , people and characteristic land and water features of an area. The questions that the students are asked during a geography bee can include, "Which state in the United States is the largest grower of oranges?", "Name at least three cities that the River Thames flows through" and "What are the average summer low and high temperatures in Moscow?"

Map of the Earth Geography (from Greek geografia ) is the study of the earth and its features, inhabitants, and phenomena. A literal translation would be "to describe or write about the Earth". The first person to use the word "geography" was Eratosthenes (276-194 B.C.). Four historical traditions in geographical research are the spatial analysis of natural and human phenomena (geography as a study of distribution), area studies (places and regions), study of man-land relationship, and research in earth sciences. Nonetheless, modern geography is an all-encompassing discipline that foremost seeks to understand the world and all of its human and natural complexities not merely where objects are, but how they have changed and come to be. As "the bridge between the human and physical sciences," geography is divided into two main branches - human geography and physical geography.
