From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Men's studies - sometimes called masculinity studies - is an interdisciplinary academic field devoted to topics concerning men masculinity gender , and politics . As a relatively new field of study, men's studies was formed largely in response to, and as a critique of, an emerging men's rights movement - itself a response to perceived advantages brought to women by feminist political action - and as such, has been taught in academic settings only since the 1970s. In many universities, men's studies is a correlate to women's studies or part of a larger gender studies program, and as such its faculty tends to be sympathetic to or engaged in feminist politics. In contrast to the discipline of Masculine Psychology , Men's studies programs and courses often include contemporary discussions of men's rights, masculism feminist theory queer theory matriarchy ... patriarchy , and, more generally, the social, historical, and cultural constructions of men and virility . They often discuss the issues surrounding male privilege , seen as evolving into more subtle forms rather than disappearing in the modern era.

CHANGING MEN'S STUDIES
JEFF HEARN
[Re-Emergence - Issue 8 - April 1987]
Men individually and collectively, and as a social and economic category, are increasingly problematic. This change has developed alongside the maintenance and growth of men's power. It has also prompted the focused study of men and masculinity. Here I introduce some personal, political and theoretical reasons for men to focus on the study of men; consider some problems to do with this project; assess the state of Men's Studies as a developing academic sub-discipline in Europe and North America; and outline some promises that are offered by such a process. I hope this will assist in exchanging information, building networks and critique. No longer is it possible to take maleness for granted, or to recognise one uniquely dominant model of masculinity. And yet while men and masculinity are problematic, men have been and still are powerful. Men's power remains, while that power is less certain, so that men are becoming less certain of ourselves/themselves. As men and masculinity have become more problematic, we/they have come to be seen more as 'topics' for study and observation. Justifications for this I shall consider conveniently under the three perspectives of the personal, the political and the theoretical, before discussing the state of 'men's studies'.
THE PERSONAL
Every man, deep down, knows he's a worthless piece of shit. Overwhelmed by a sense of animalism and deeply ashamed of it; wanting, not to express himself, but to hide from others his total physicality's total egocentricity, the hate and contempt he feels for other men, and to hide from himself the hate and contempt he suspects other men feel for him.

Deborah Lambert, April 16, 2010 After more than 40 years of male-bashing by feminists from Betty Friedan to Gloria Allred, is there anything left to say on the subject? For some scholars, the answer is absolutely “yes.” That’s why they recently announced the formation of the Foundation for Male Studies, according to InsideHigherEducation’s Jennifer Epstein. The new group does not want to be lumped into the “gender studies” category as just another Women’s Studies offering. Rather, it is aimed at “exploring the triumphs and struggles of the XY-chromosomed of the human race” without feeling compelled to describe them as “an offshoot of feminist theory.” Rutgers University Anthropology professor Lionel Tiger, who blames feminism for the “highly successful, very colorful denigration of maleness as a force,” explains that the new field of study “takes its cues from the notion that male and female organisms really are different” and “the enormous relation between . . . a person’s biology and their behavior” is being ignored by most contemporary scholarship. Christina Hoff Sommers, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, echoes Tiger’s concerns, saying that the widespread anti-male attitudes in this country mean that “masculinity itself is becoming politically incorrect.” Sommers is the author of

Gender Studies Main Page
The information necessary to create a male is encoded in our DNA, but it takes all the institution of a culture to produce a man. The male body is the biologically given "hardware," the myth of manhood is the "software" inserted by society through a series of formal and informal rites of passage. - - - Sandor McNab The program is designed to serve the professional needs of social and political advocates, public and private policy makers, educators, therapists, personnel directors, ministers, human right's advocates and EAP counselors. This program focuses on the spiritual, cultural, social, familial, ethnic, political, economic, historical, philosophical, medical and psychological aspects of "being male" in our modern society. Our aim is to develop leaders and mentors who can work effectively and responsibly within the diversity of the men's movement, affecting social policy, and building a broader base of knowledge for the study and research of both genders. Studies include male psychology, men's and father's rights, masculine spirituality, models and roles of masculinity, contemporary issues facing men, early childhood development, new roles for fathers, the modern family, gender and power, the challenge of marriage, issues in men's physical health, gender and politics, ancient and modern rites of passage, life stages, Jung's contributions to male psychology, family violence, men in literature, war and trauma, the men's movement, new models of male leadership, and issues in male sexuality. In addition, students will be engaged in a local Practicum that brings together learning with action, research with practice.

It was one of the most enlightening classes I had ever taken, because it was the first time I learned to acknowledge the social forces that influence masculinity and the oppressions and challenges faced by those whose genders are masculine. So it makes me thrilled to know that the academic discipline of is gaining traction in universities in the U.S. and abroad. Last week in The Globe and Mail , Leah McLaren wrote a column As an extension of women’s studies, the study of masculinity is illogical. After all, couldn’t most academic inquiry throughout history be classified as men’s studies? By viewing everything through the lens of gender, universities risk losing sight of one of their basic purposes, which is to connect young minds with great literature and big ideas. Subject: men's studies We are considering mounting an intro to men's studies course that would run concurrently with intro to women's studies. We were wondering what kind of reception others had found when offering this course and what problems, if any, they encountered. One concern is that doing so blurs the lines between women's and gender studies and might take our program in a different direction than we have been heading. Honesty is more than just not being dishonest. It is an active choice to be responsible for the choices we make before we act upon them so that we can stand up for them and not be tempted to be dishonest. Sharon Jacobson, Ed. D.
