Welcome to the Peace Studies Program at the
University of North Texas The Peace Studies Program is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the questions of why violence occurs and how conflict may be resolved or settled under nonviolent structural mechanisms. Key components of the Peace Studies Program concentrate on the issues of justice and the determinants of violence that often occur as a result of conflict related to economic and social inequality. The program additionally focuses on the understanding of human processes that may lead to a more desirable human condition. Some course work students may take include studies on: terrorism, genocide, government sponsored killings, third-world politics, religious inequality, current controversial global topics, negotiation and dispute resolution, poverty, racial discrimination, international law, and world population trends; just to name a few. Established in 2000, the Peace Studies Program at the University Of North Texas is the only program of its kind in the southern and southwestern United States that offers a certificate program a minor , and the equivalent of a major in Peace Studies under the International Studies degree program. This is also the only Peace Studies Program in the region to have an endowed professorshipthe

In 1993, the GIP earned recognition for its peace activities receiving the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. To ensure long-term objectives, the GIP has placed institutional focus on the development of a peace- and leadership-oriented academic curriculum. In particular, the GIP seeks to offer courses based on a theory-praxis combination. The interdisciplinary nature of its educational program is demonstrated in a variety of regular courses and special lectures in Philosophy, Human Sciences, Ethics and Social Sciences.

About Peace Studies
What is Peace Studies? The Peace Studies discipline seeks to provide the intellectual structure for nonviolent approaches to personal, national, and global conflicts. Direct violence emerges from structural, cultural, and personal patterns that support it. Thus, sustainable peace requires more than the ending of direct violence, but also the building of cooperative structures, creative cultures, and conflict resolution capacities in human relationships. In the twenty-first century, the problem of violence exists on multiple levels, from domestic abuse and entrenched poverty to international armed conflict, terrorism and counter-terrorism. We face the prospect of a nuclear conflagration on one side, with the daily reality of low-technology conflicts in dozens of countries on another. In the organized violence of warfare, far more civilians die than soldiers; small arms destroy more than sophisticated weaponry, and war-related poverty, displacement, and disease are the biggest killers of all. Moreover, in refugee camps and urban communities alike, the pervasive incidence of violence within families and communities feeds and is fed by violence in its other forms. Peace Studies students analyze historical, philosophical, socio-cultural, political-economic and psychological influences that often lead to violent conflict, and the nonviolent alternative pathways toward sustainable peace. In both classroom and experiential learning, students are invited to think critically about our world, to act creatively, and to fashion their own and our collective future in a holistic and supportive educational environment.

Social Justice and Peace Studies
The Social Justice and Peace Studies program encourages critical reflection on structural injustices locally and globally and calls for social action to transform the world in the interests of equity and the pursuit of peace.
This innovative cross-disciplinary program offers one of four core courses in social justice and peace in each of the four years leading to a degree. These core courses are combined with existing courses drawn from a variety of disciplines such as sociology, politics, economics, history, social work, religious studies, and others. There is a mandatory service component in second year that engages students in local issues of Social Justice and Peace and an optional overseas or cross-cultural service component offering a variety of opportunities that may be undertaken at any time after first year. Course credit can be arranged for these experiences.
