      Peace Studies Curriculum
When most people think about the meaning of peace, they think along the lines of the absence of war. But there is actually much more to it than that. Peace Studies Courses Students in peace studies courses explore the theories and practices of peace and justice throughout history. They also investigate the nature of peace, freedom, justice and war. Peace studies curriculums aim to equip students with the ability to contribute to establishing conditions that promote peace and human welfare across the world. Students have their choice of a number of peace studies concentrations. Some of these concentrations that can be offered by peace studies curriculums include: No matter which peace studies concentration they choose, students will be required to take certain credits. Some of these peace studies courses may include economic, political and civil rights classes, as well as morality, diplomatic decision-making and conflict analysis. Topics such as ethics, nonviolent action and the transformation of individual and group behavior are very important to peace studies curriculums at the graduate level.

New SIPRI Fact Sheet on military spending and arms procurement in the Gulf states
Recent reports that Saudi Arabia is seeking to purchase large numbers of combat aircraft and helicopters indicate that Saudi Arabia is planning a new arms-purchasing spree similar to that in the 1990s. This has raised questions about the possible impacts of military build-ups in the Gulf region, which includes both Iran and Iraq. To inform debate on this issue, SIPRI has prepared a fact sheet on military spending and arms imports in the Gulf states. Read more and download the Fact Sheet here

Bickmore, K. (1993). Conflict Matters: Teaching about Peace in the Social Studies Curriculum. Paper presented at the Thresholds in Education, 19, 3, 25-33 Aug 1993. Drawing on two case studies from a larger qualitative study of four public high school teachers modeling conflict-management approaches in their social-studies classrooms, this article focuses on teachers' treatment of a key concept (the idea of rights) that captures the individual's confrontation with the political society. Tolerance and associated skills cannot be taught if conflict is avoided. (26 references) (MLH) Bjerstedt, A. (1998 Length: 26 Page(s); 1 Microfiche). Home Academics › Peace Studies The mission of the Peace Studies Program is to promote understanding of the causes of conflict and creative strategies for its peaceful resolution in our community, our nation, and our world. Conflict occurs constantly among the people with whom we live and work, between groups in our communities, and throughout our global landscape. Conflict is so engrained in human interaction that we will never escape it. Not all conflicts are the same, however. Some are destructive, others, productive. Why do some conflicts erupt into violence and violations of human dignity, while other conflicts find creative solutions leading to improvements in the human condition? How can we find effective ways to resolve our differences more productively? To this end, the Peace Studies Program promotes understanding of the causes of conflict and the exploration of creative strategies for preventing and resolving conflict on multiple levels, from the interpersonal to the international. The Peace Studies Program seeks to promote opportunities for meaningful dialogue and peacebuilding through supporting programs and projects that address:
  • conflict analysis, resolution/transformation or peacebuilding strategies

Peace and Reconciliation Studies is defined as the interdisciplinary examination of the conditions that make for peace, with a special emphasis on reconciliation (forgiveness) as a vital factor in the realization of peace. It also investigates the obstacles to the realization of these conditions, drawing on theories and methods from diverse disciplines to focus on what makes for the development of a just and peaceful world order. Peace and Reconciliation Studies relates scholarship to praxis and challenges those who engage in it to develop new ways of thinking and acting in the world. The program offers two undergraduate and one graduate programs. See below for Minor details. Interdisciplinary Curriculum Peace Studies offers an 18-credit Interdisciplinary Curriculum (similar to a minor). Click
