The Inspiration And Nature Of Democracy by Philip Atkinson A Common Prejudice Whenever the notion of democracy is criticised contemporary citizens (circa 2000) often ignore the logic of the arguments but simply reiterate that ancient Greek civilization proved the value of democracy. It certainly did, but the example of ancient Greek civilization is the opposite of a recommendation for democracy. Ancient Greek civilization rose to wealth and power as a series of city states each ruled by a monarch, who the Greeks referred to as a tyrant. The start of the decline of ancient Greek civilization was marked by the Peloponessian war in the 5 th century BC, which was effectively a rebellion against the traditional rule of tyrants. The status quo was championed by Sparta and the rebellion by Athens, who had replaced their tyrant with a forum of wealthy citizens. The Athenian approach was to let the forum decide issues via a discussion followed by a vote, and this is generally considered as the birth of democracy. Hence the performance of the Athen's assembly at this time must be considered the ultimate example of democracy in action: a performance that is well documented by Thucydides in his history of the Peloponessian war. And this record is summarised by H.D.F. Kitto, in his work ' The Greeks ', as follows:

The Briney Ethical Trust Established 1999 Established October 1, 1999, with a gift from Sandra Garlington Briney, The Briney Ethical Trust marks the onset of a long term commitment to promote ethical politics and government. The Briney Ethical Fund established with the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan, through its affiliate the North Central Michigan Community Foundation, is a qualified public charity under the Internal Revenue Code. Since this fund is endowed, under Michigan law contributions to it are eligible for tax credit. The purpose of the Briney Ethical Trust is to promote ethical politics and government. USU Search Search Welcome to the Political Science Department Old Main 320 Finding the life of the mind Article written by Carol McNamara published in the stateman Sept 27, 2010. When students commence their college education, they often believe that it will change their lives in a practical way. They will study to become engineers, doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, entrepreneurs, along with myriad other noble and useful possibilities. But how many also arrive at university in search of the life of the mind? Tom Wolfe's novel "I Am Charlotte Simmons" pursues that very question by asking us to consider what the life of the mind is: is the human mind hardwired so that every aspect of a human life is determined by biology, or do environment and education have an impact? In fact, the novel is something of an experiment in the debate between nurture and nature, newly revived by the field of sociobiology and remarkable advances in neuroscience. There has been much discussion about the literary merits of "I Am Charlotte Simmons". It won an award for the worst sex scene in literature for the year it came out. Whatever its stylistic merits, the book raises a vital question for college students. It is an age old question: who am I? Charlotte quite literally believes she finds the life of the mind as a star student in Dr. Starling's Introduction to Neuroscience class. The question the professor asks the class to consider from the start is whether human beings are genetically determined animals with a rational mind; much like a rock with consciousness, which has no ability to change the arc of its flight once thrown, but only the capacity to rationalize the path nature has chosen for it or whether external influences, like good teachers and great books, and the free will to act on what we learn, can really change the trajectory of our lives?

Supporters of the initiative acknowledge that they do not know of a single case of Sharia being used in Oklahoma, which has only 15,000 Muslims. Some conservative activists contend that the U.S. is at risk of falling under Sharia law. They point to Europe, with its larger Muslim population and various accommodations to the Islamic religious law. In England, Muslims can enter special Sharia courts to decide divorce and custody cases if both parties agree. Criminal and other civil cases are still heard in secular courts. In the U.S., those who warn of the dangers of Sharia can point to only a handful of cases that merely allude to the centuries-old, complex tangle of Muslim religious law. And in none of the cases cited has any U.S. court held that Sharia law is the law of the land here.
