Our undergraduate program combines a firm theoretical foundation with an understanding of practical applications. Teaching methods in both elective and required courses stress the use of case studies, hands-on experience, and simulations that demonstrate how theory and concepts evolve into practical applications. The Master of Public Administration is accredited by NASPAA and is designed to prepare graduates for middle or senior level positions as public administrators. The primary focus of the program is on in-service students seeking to undertake graduate study on a part-time basis in order to upgrade and improve their practical skills and theoretical backgrounds. These students come from municipal, county, state, and non-profit agencies in the region served by Kean University. Each year a small number of students are admitted without extensive government experience. Why Public Administration?

Sloan Foundation ... Leadership Introduction Purpose How to Lead during Bioattacks provides government leaders with guidance on anticipating and averting governing pitfalls that arise during epidemics. This resource:
  • Sets forth strategic goals that distinguish effective, compassionate leadership in epidemics Illustrates circumstances posed by bioattacks that further complicate response to the health crisis Identifies dilemmas of governing that commonly arise during naturally occurring or intentionally caused epidemics Recommends principles and actions for averting and/or remedying such predicaments.
Background To address the issue, the UPMC Center for Biosecurity convened the Working Group on 'Governance Dilemmas' in Bioterrorism Response from February 2003–February 2004. This group is comprised of thirty professionals including veteran political and public health leaders; medicine, public health, and disaster experts; community leaders and special population advocates; and news media, public affairs and risk communication experts. In March 2004, the Working Group published a consensus statement entitled "Leading during Bioattacks and Epidemics with the Public's Trust and Help" in the peer-reviewed journal Biosecurity and Bioterrorism.

  • Undergraduate ... Undergraduate Public Policy The undergraduate program in public policy offers a major and minor in public policy as well as a 4+1 BA/MPP track. Students pursuing the 4+1 track take a set of foundation courses as undergraduates that prepare them to complete a one-year master's in public policy (MPP) at Mills. Students who major in public policy automatically fulfill these foundation requirements, but students in other majors may do so as well (and become eligible for the one-year MPP Program). Visit the requirements page for more detail on the major, minor, and MPP foundation curricula. At Mills, public policy students acquire:
    • the quantitative and qualitative methods, perspectives, and approaches needed to assess and better address policy issues in the United States and beyond; familiarity with all phases of policy development, implementation, and evaluation; and opportunities to secure employment in government, the private sector, and the nonprofit sector, or to gain admission to graduate programs in public policy, management, law, and business.
Because policy problems and solutions cannot be understood by relying on the frameworks of any single academic discipline, the field of policy studies is necessarily interdisciplinary. Our core curriculum draws from government, economics, moral philosophy, law, and policy analysis. Context courses draw on history, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, and ethnic studies.
