An overview of the broad field of recreation and leisure services emphasizing the understanding of various leisure phenomena. As such, it provides the student with an introductory understanding of the nature and scope of leisure, leisure behaviour, affiliated recreation activity, and the array of resources associated with each.

It is a discipline concerned with the study and practice of the public, private and commercial service systems that provide opportunities for meaningful leisure activity. The program offers a major and a minor. Features Students in Recreation and Leisure Studies enjoy rich opportunities for a wide variety of direct leadership and supervisory field experiences in recreation and park departments, clinical settings, hospitals, profit and nonprofit organizations. Students serve internships and volunteer in recreation and park agencies, schools, child care centers, corporations, youth centers, YM/WCAs, convalescent homes, rehabilitation centers, private and state hospitals, and with private therapeutic recreation agencies. Students selecting the Recreation Administration option will complete the necessary course work required by the California Board of Recreation and Park Certification to apply for the Recreator Certificate. This certificate is designed to certify that an individual is qualified by education and experience to conduct and administer recreation services.

The interdisciplinary major in the recreation and leisure studies program should be of particular interest to students who anticipate careers in recreation professions. Our Mission
The Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies is concerned with the ways in which health and well-being are enhanced through the effective use of leisure. To this end, it is concerned with how individuals, groups, and societies plan, organize, and use resources for leisure. Accordingly, departmental research and teaching focuses on the social, psychological, economic and environmental aspects of leisure. Through its research and teaching expertise the department contributes to the advancement of recreation and leisure services and the enhancement of the quality of individual and community life.

Missouri State University offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. Students select either a comprehensive major with one of four degree options or a non-comprehensive major in community or private/commercial, with a selected minor. Careers in the field of recreation and leisure services are many and varied. One needs only to consider the infinite ways people use their free time to realize the variety of employment settings.
