It describes, compares, interprets, and explains religion, emphasising systematic, historically-based, and cross-cultural perspectives. While theology attempts to understand the intentions of a supernatural force (such as deities ), religious studies tries to study human religious behavior and belief from outside any particular religious viewpoint. Religious studies draws upon multiple disciplines and their methodologies including anthropology sociology psychology philosophy , and history of religion Religious studies originated in the nineteenth century, when scholarly and historical analysis of the Bible had flourished, and Hindu and Buddhist texts were first being translated into European languages. What this handout is about
This handout will help you to write research papers in religious studies. The staff of the Writing Center wrote this handout with the undergraduate student population at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) specifically in mind. However, this handout does not address every kind of writing task that religious studies instructors at UNC-CH assign. So in addition to reading this handout, we also recommend that you speak directly with your instructor about her or his particular expectations for an assignment. top
Religious studies is an interdisciplinary field
Before starting on your first writing assignment, you should know that religious studies is a deeply interdisciplinary field, and that your instructor may assign writing projects that require you to use theories and methods drawn from many other departments, programs, and curricula of study. At UNC-CH, these other fields may include: Anthropology, Area Studies (American Studies, Asian Studies, Latin American Studies, Russian/East European Studies), Art, Classics, Cognitive Science, Comparative Literature, Cultural Studies, Ecology, Economics, Folklore, History, Humanities And Human Values, International Studies, Linguistics, Management And Society, Medieval Studies, Music, Native American Studies, Peace, War And Defense, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Women's Studies.

    Welcome to Religious Studies.
As part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, our mission is to pursue the investigation of religious ideas, values and practices from a core perspective in the Humanities that engages the social and behavioral sciences and other disciplines at Arizona State University. From this interdisciplinary approach we study religion through three distinct but interdependent frames: traditions, regional contexts and themes. Religious studies brings together perspectives and approaches from history, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, and literature to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the individuals and traditions that constitute religions and cultures. For a long while many westerners have tended to think that religions are either “dying out" or have been relegated to the private sphere where they have little public or political importance. Recent events in the United States and around the world, however, have made it harder and harder to sustain this view. In our increasingly cosmopolitan world, the need to understand the root beliefs and values of diverse cultures has become a political and moral imperative. The academic study of religion seeks to explore the deep intersections between religions and cultures which have shaped, and continue to shape, personal and collective identity.

Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies
The Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in a variety of specializations within the study of religion. With particular strengths in the study of Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and the African-American religious experience, the department emphasizes descriptive, historical, critical and theoretical approaches to the study of religion. The department maintains close ties with a large number of other programs and institutes at the University of Pennsylvania and beyond, and provides students with access to a wealth of library, museum and linguistic resources. At the same time, Penn's Department of Religious Studies is a small body in which students receive a great deal of individual attention from faculty members and the opportunity to interact with students from diverse subfields. Within this context of extensive resources and personalized guidance, each student works with an advisor to design his or her own course of study. A brochure of course offerings for each semester is available at the Department office prior to preregistration for that semester. Courses are also posted online

Religion is central to all aspects of human life. The Department of Religious Studies offers a wide range of courses to help students explore religion in its many aspects in societies around the world; become familiar with the diversity of religious expressions; and develop the conceptual tools necessary for understanding how religion shapes the thoughts, lives, and values of its practitioners. The Department encourages students to draw upon a variety of fields and disciplines for their study of religion, including African-American studies, anthropology, cultural studies, gender studies, history, literary criticism, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. This interdisciplinary and multicultural character makes religious studies at Vanderbilt an excellent field for a general liberal arts education.
Students are given considerable freedom to shape their 30-hour major or 18-hour minor in religious studies around their own interests. Students are simply required to select courses that: (I) introduce them to the range of ways in which religions are studied and understood; and (II) familiarize them with at least two major world religious traditions. In the process, students learn to understand and appreciate more deeply the role religion plays in contemporary society. A major in religious studies, besides the personal growth it affords, lays a solid foundation on which to build a career in professions that demand critical thinking and conceptual flexibility in interacting with diverse populations. The minor in religious studies and the minor in Jewish studies, though narrower in scope, have the same goals.

    Why Study Religion?
For better or for worse, religion is a fixture in life and society as we know it. It interacts with virtually every area of human thought and activity, including:
    • Politics Medicine Sexuality Economics Law Education Literature Art
One therefore need not consider oneself “religious” in order to find religion worth studying. The academic study of religion exists to help make sense of both the history of religions and religious experience in general.
    Studying Religion at Alma
Among other things, Religious Studies examines the way a person or community makes sense out of life (world view) and the ways a person or community acts out a particular world view (lifestyle). The study of religion includes:
    • Exploration of the nature and meaning of religious dimensions of human experience (theorizing religion) Study of the traditions which remember and transmit religious experience and expressions (world religions, history, and theology) Familiarity with traditional and contemporary scholarly approaches to the study of religion (methodology) Understanding of the concrete implications of religious world views (ethical, social, and political analysis)

About the department The courses of the department of religious studies focus on the study of Christianity and Judaism in both their historical and contemporary expressions, and on the major non-Western religious traditions. While the introductory courses are broad in scope, they seek to be selective enough to allow an in-depth encounter with source documents through historical understanding. Methods of instruction include not only lectures and seminars but also opportunities for independent study and individual instruction. The program of the department aims to serve not only students whose academic specialization is religious studies but also students who seek courses that can help unlock the religious dimensions encountered in other disciplines.
